An 89-year-old woman is in critical condition after being struck by a motorist while crossing 48th Street near Northern Boulevard on Saturday.

The elderly woman was crossing 48th Street at around 2:40 p.m. when a driver operating a Dodge Durango made a left turn out of a parking lot and hit her. The driver, who was exiting the parking lot where BJ’s Wholesale Club is located, was turning northbound on 48th Street.

EMS responded to the scene and transported the 89-year-old to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst where she is listed in critical condition.

The driver, a 37-year-old man, remained on the scene. He too was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst but with minor injuries.

No arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.

Just because

There are crosswalks and lights there doesn’t make them ACCESSIBLE!!

There are NO ramps at all for the crosswalks!!! At all!!! And the crosswalk on the Guitar Center side of the street is always (and I do mean ALWAYS) blocked by the same food truck.

Second, take a good logical hard look at how this city handles 90% of the crosswalks. They are nearly always at the end of blocks and right at a light. And then the light is always matched with the turning cars going as the crosswalk people also have the green light!!!

Duh, dude!

No more bike lanes

Sounds like what the mayor calls “traffic violence”? Maybe make more bike lanes?

Yes. Too many cars & trucks there as it is. The more we make our streets unfriendly to motor vehicles and friendlier to bikes & scooters, the safer they will be for pedestrians.

Best wishes for victim

That has always been a dangerous crossing. Maybe now something will be done to fix it
Prayers for the woman’s full recovery

They need crosswalks and lights there. You jam more people into this area but don’t supply the infrastructure! Nice job NYC.

There are traffic lights. Traffic leaving the BJ’s lot gets a green light along with the pedestrians crossing, so they have to yield, whether turning left, or right.

Yes they do. But they always have to anyway.

So what’s the problem? Try crossing when you have big carts full of whatever you got from BJ’s or Burlington’s. There are no ramps to get from the high sidewalks to the street. On either side. Then you get to the other side and you now have to pop wheelies around the food truck that is ALWAYS parked there!!! Blocking the crosswalk mind you which is illegal!

It would be helpful to know if she was using the crosswalk or was she jay-walking. She was 89 so I assume she was being careful but you never know.

City Council passes bill shifting broker fee burden to landlords, sparking backlash from real estate industry and key critics

The New York City Council passed a landmark bill on Wednesday, aiming to relieve renters of paying hefty broker fees — a cost that will now fall on the party who hires the listing agent. Known as the FARE Act (Fairness in Apartment Rentals), the legislation passed with a veto-proof majority of 42-8, despite opposition from Republicans and conservative Democrats.
