Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer received an e-mail this afternoon that claimed he was a traitor who should be executed.
The e-mail arrived at 3:35 pm, about half an hour after Van Bramer sent a mass e-mail reminding his constituents about his march Saturday over the Queensboro Bridge to Trump Tower to protest the President Elect’s discriminatory pledges.
Van Bramer’s mass e-mail also said that 700 people packed out the Sunnyside Community Services Center Wednesday night to discuss ways to fight back against xenophobic policy.
The threat made against Van Bramer was part of an e-mail where the writer referred to the 700 attendees as “communistic socialists” who were destroying the neighborhood. The writer said that “the rest of the people from Queens do not agree with your homosexual lifestyle [Van Bramer is gay], so get the fuck out of this country, you fucking traitor.”
“I will keep a close eye on your every move so that when it’s time to execute traitors, I will try my best so that your name is included in that list of traitors. Execution is the penalty for a traitor, that is the Law of this Land.”
The NYPD is investigating the matter.
Van Bramer said that he will continue to fight for people’s rights despite the threat.
“I’m not terrified and I’m certainly not stopping,” he said.

When are people going to realize Trump is out for himself and himself only. He could give a crap about the regular person. Give Trump a chance, are you kidding me? People who win don’t make threats, they won, this sounds like all these fake ” threats” being made on campuses. The professor at NYU who put a noose on her on door handle? Remember those 3 girls at Albany complaining about how they were attacked on the bus and it turned out they attacked a white girl and they made the threats? Hillary even tweeted support to them. So many people quick to judge. Life is a 2 way street.

I would, But protesting a legal result of a democratic election is not democratic. It is anti-democracy.

Jimmy is a true patriot. He believes in equality, justice and freedom and works tirelessly for his constituents–indeed for all New Yorkers. Anonymous threats are the work of cowards. The person who sent the threat should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
actually what you said is false, i think hes a good guy with a lot of energy to help our area but when you organize events that look separate people and cause MORE tension he is not helping. As a leader he should be above this. I really lost a tremendous amount or respect I had for him by his partisan events recently. Even Obama has been big enough, for the good of the country and its people, to not spread more anger and hatred.

Being “productive” in a democracy includes civic activity such as these marches against Trump’s hateful agenda or, if you’re so inclined, against abortion or whatever other cause you’re interested in.
It seems to me that if the so-called Trump deplorables had been more politically active in their own self interests over the last thirty years, our democracy would be healthier and the deplorables would have a better standard of living.

I do not agree with these marches, all this “outrage”, and the progressive agenda in general, but I know JVB is a good guy and truly believes what he is doing is right and I respect that.
Disagreement, debates and some yelling is normal and healthy, but threats of violence is crossing the line.
One thing I find curious is that in NYC when a progressive threatens to get “violent” with a conservative (namely, my 80 year old Trump supporting uncle – who was told – “move out of the neighborhood, die, or we will fu**ing kill you”), it is laughed off as “young people blowing off steam” by the PD. No report taken – so “it did not happen.”
BTW – my uncle was about to beat the piss out of this “progressive” – but was physically held back.

This is just wrong. Jimmy Van Bramer has done so much for the community and deserves our support. The list of things he has done to help so many are endless. He really does work tirelessly. Everyone has the right to free speech. Just because someone says something or lives a lifestyle you don’t agree with doesn’t make them a traitor to the country. I don’t get why people would HATE someone because of who they love either, regardless of gender. Love is love and Jimmy’s meeting last night was all about love. Love is not a gender or race it is universal. i applaud Van Bramer for not allowing this to deter him, and for the man who is so full of hate he wants to kill people I hope that he comes to his senses and comes to understand the principles by which America was founded–that anyone can live the life they choose as long as it does not harm another. Killing harms others. I feel sorry for people so full of hate and these rallies are not about hate, nor is Van Bramer. He deserves our support.
I truly hope that the police investigate this matter and the person responsible for making a threat goes to jail for a long time. People like that want to scare people into not voicing their opinion.

I was really pleased and proud of Councilmember Van Bramer for speaking so strongly against racism, sexism, anti-Islam, and other negative rhetoric that Trump is encouraging. The march is a great idea and I can’t wait to participate!
