Nearly 20 candidates have come forward to run in the Democratic primary for the 26th District Council seat currently held by Jimmy Van Bramer.
We speak to Julie Won who is one of those candidates vying for the seat that covers Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City and a portion of Astoria.
The primary is scheduled to take place in June and Van Bramer is unable to run again due to term limits.
Won, who is a member of Community Board 2, lives in Sunnyside. She is an immigrant from South Korea whose family moved to the United States when she was 8 years old.
Won, who works in the tech industry, said that she would focus heavily on the plight of small businesses should she take office. She said that she wants small businesses prioritized ahead of corporate interests during the city’s economic recovery.
She said that she would also fight for universal housing as well as universal broadband, among other issues.
Won announced this week that she has raised over $65,000 for the race, qualifying for the maximum in matching funds.
