A Woodside man was sentenced to 25 years in prison today for fatally stabbing his wife in front of their 7-year-old daughter.

Balbir Singh, 37, killed his wife, Kulwinder Kaur, after the two got involved in an argument in their 64th Street Woodside home on Sunday, April 6, 2008.

Singh stabbed Kaur four times; once in the chest, once in the breast, once in the upper right shoulder and once in the upper back. When the couple’s seven-year-old daughter, Bubita Rani, tried to come to her mother’s aid she was stabbed on the forearm by her father and required 11 stitches.

Singh pleaded guilty to first degree manslaughter charges in January. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said the plea-deal ensured Singh’s daughter would not have to testify.

“The lengthy prison sentence imposed today by the court is more than justified. The defendant not only violently attacked and killed his wife in front of their young daughter but also turned his knife on the child when she came to her mother’s aid,” Brown said.
