Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed union organizer Claire Valdez in her bid for New York Assembly District 37, which encompasses Sunnyside, Ridgewood, Long Island City and Maspeth.

Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure in the Democratic Socialist movement, praised fellow socialist Valdez for her leadership and commitment to key issues affecting New Yorkers. “As a UAW leader, Claire understands the needs of working people and is a fighter for affordable housing, a fully funded MTA, and climate justice,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I’m proud to support Claire Valdez for Queens Assembly District 37. Let’s send her to Albany.”

Valdez expressed gratitude for Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, highlighting their shared platform. “I am so proud to be endorsed by Queens comrade and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” Valdez stated.

“Alexandria is a fearless champion for working-class New Yorkers against the corporate interests trying to auction off our future. She inspires everyone to dream bigger and fight harder. Thank you Congresswoman, not only for your belief in this campaign, but for your commitment to building the collective power of our movement.”

Valdez has also received endorsements from other key figures, including UAW President Shawn Fain and state Sen. Michael Gianaris, who represents western Queens.

The endorsement comes at a crucial time for Valdez, who is campaigning on a platform that includes fully funded public services, affordable housing, and strong labor rights.

“Queens is a borough that connects people across language, culture, and national origin, and so our vision for Queens is one where we invest in the things that bring us together,” Valdez said.

Assembly District 37 previously overlapped with Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional district in areas like Sunnyside.

The district’s current representative, Juan Ardila, is seeking reelection despite facing significant controversy and calls for his resignation due to allegations of sexual misconduct.

Valdez’s competition on the ballot includes Johanna Carmona, a public servant from Sunnyside. Carmona has secured a series of prominent endorsements from influential figures such as Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks and state Sen. John Liu.

Another candidate who only cares about poor people of color. Socialism is for losers who fail in capitalism and need a handout because they can’t make it on their own. The white middle class is endangered in this city. Why don’t these socialists examine why Black people continue to exhibit high levels of crime and violence in our society.
