Police have released a shocking video of a mugger brazenly hit a 77-year-old woman in Astoria on Sunday – while robbing the senior of her handbag that contained a bible and cash.
The unsettling footage, captured on a cellphone by a passerby at around noon, shows the pair tussle over her bag in front of a discount store at 21-12 36th Ave.
The crook tries to take off with the bag as the 77-year-old clutches onto it with both hands in what essentially becomes a tug-of-war. The mugger then slaps the senior in the face and takes off with the bag.
The suspect fled the scene on foot into the Ravenswood Houses NYCHA development, police said.
The elderly woman suffered cuts to her hands and was evaluated by EMS at the scene but she refused further medical attention, police said.
The woman’s purse contained a watch, $30 cash and a bible, police said.

Never a description of the criminal due to political correctness. Also, very few outlets call attention to the ridiculous and lame way the mayor is managing and failing this city. I see crimes everyday and the mayor continues to call this the safest city in the country. Perhaps he should lighten up on the pot smoking?
About the video taker NOT stepping in, would YOU have stepped in to assist? Beating off an asshole attacker is one thing, getting a video, posting it online with police will actually STOP the asshole from doing it again! It’ll take longer but he’ll get his comeuppance and a tarnished record.
There are no candlelight vigils ever for those who don’t mind their business and get killed.

That old woman put up a pretty decent fight against that cowardly punk, although I’m not sure if it was a good idea. She’s just too vulnerable at her age. Let’s face it. In NYC, the punks are winning and the police are not allowed to stop them or the protesters will be out in force. That punk is going to throw the bible away but he’ll spend the money on some trinkets to impress his girlfriends. There will be little point in catching him. He will be out on the streets the same day.

How is someone recording and not doing anything?? Years ago the community would of stopped him and waited for the police to come pick him up. These criminals know no one does anything anymore and are given an excuse for their criminal actions.

It’s a good thing someone was just few feet away to record this whole thing on their cellphone. I’m sure they’ll catch this guy in a few weeks and then release him back into the wild.
Astoria can be loud and dangerous especially for seniors who like to venture on their own. I offered my mom a room in LI where i live during the pandemic and she finally agreed to leave stating how Astoria has changed for the worse since these progressives and liberals moved into their over priced apartments because they were cheaper than manhattan Brooklyn and Lic but they would never move to communities they claim to support.
Good job being an awesome daughter! Nice to see people still respecting and caring for their parents. Brings some hope and light into this darkness.
