A man was fatally shot outside the Woodside Houses NYCHA development this afternoon, the second fatal shooting to take place by the complex in less than a month.
The police said that a 30-year-old man was shot five times in the lower body at around 1:13 p.m. in front of 31-69 49th St.. The victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The victim’s name has yet to be released pending family notification and the police did not say what sparked the shooting or whether they had any suspects.
The incident follows the shooting death of Gudelia Vallinas, 37, who was killed by a stray bullet while she was walking near Woodside Houses on the evening of March 12.
She was killed when she got caught between two men who had an apparent altercation at the NYCHA complex. The incident spilled out on the street, and one of the men ran down Broadway firing several shots– with one bullet fatally striking her.
Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and State Sen. Jessica Ramos, who both represent the development, issued a joint statement saying that “Woodside Houses is a good community with good people.”
The pair added that the “recent incidents of gun violence are completely unacceptable and have no place in Woodside or our city as a whole.”

This will keep happening. The criminals know they can carry guns without worrying about the police.
Where would the NYCHA Residents go if it was disbanded?
Reminds me of the two mass shootings in our country in a month.
They were having a bad day. Maybe it’s because if their sex addiction?
While most people thought it was an infraction of peoples rights but it did work. The data from Stop & frisk showed time over time that it reduced guns and death by guns on the streets of NYC. But the community activists (that are nowhere to be seen these days) claimed it was racial profiling and it must be disbanded immediately. Much to the common sense advice from the wises ones who advised against it as it kept the residents of the poorer neighborhoods safe, nope they didn’t want to hear about it. get rid of it immediately. Which makes one think. Does the the community activists & local politicians really really care about the well being of those same people the claim to care so much about. I think not.
Please disband NYCHA, diversity the complex before another NYCHA development destroys another NYC neighborhood. It’s a pattern with NYCHA.
Sure, why don’t Ramos and JVB go over there right now, hold a rally and provide some conflict resolution in person. And while you’re at it, bring along Tiffany Caban, whose parents were both raised there.
“root causes of gun violence” – let’s send in the social workers and Sigmund Freud while we are at it. Violent people do violent crimes! Get used to it, people: Jimmy and his pals really do not get it at all.
