Governor Andrew Cuomo extended the statewide eviction moratorium a further two months today, as more and more New Yorkers are unable to make rent.
Cuomo first issued the moratorium — for both residential and commercial renters — on March 20 by an executive order to prevent landlords from evicting people and business owners during the coronavirus crisis. The moratorium was set to expire in June and today Cuomo extended it through August 20.
“No one can be evicted for nonpayment of rent — residents or commercial — because of COVID until August 20,” Cuomo said at his daily press briefing today.
He also introduced additional measures to protect renters.
The state is banning late payment fees during the moratorium and allowing renters to use their security deposit as a rent payment, Cuomo said.
They can then repay the security deposit over a longer period of time, he added.
“People literally are worried about being able to pay rent,” Cuomo said. “You don’t work for two months and that rent bill keeps coming in.”
The governor said he hopes the extension gives struggling New Yorkers some relief.
“I hope it gives families a deep breath. Nothing can happen until August 20.”
However, some say his moratorium does not go far enough. The moratorium prevents people from being kicked out of their homes or businesses during the pandemic, but it doesn’t cancel rent payments or provide rent forgiveness.
Cuomo today said he will revisit the moratorium order as August approaches, with the possibility of extending it.
“We’ll see what happens between now and then,” he said.

Cancel evictions without providing mortgage and tax relief? So what happens if a tenant can’t pay for 3 months? 5 months? When everything reopens does Cuomo imagine that these people can pay months of back rent? How about utilities? What a joke!

Is this NYS or just New York City?? Got a granddaughter upstate they been trying to evict for ova a yr now.
That’s all well and good, but NYS needs to pay their rent. Nothing is free in this world and landlords have bills and kids to feed, too.
Question is will people have to pay back rent when august 20th comes?
What about the banks who foreclose on the landlords for not paying their mortgages? Is this just a wealth transfer to the banks?
In reality, the banks own everything… even Comrade Cuomo!
I want to give a big shoutout to governor Andrew Cuomo for a excellent job he’s done givin us updates on NYC and surrounding New York State during this pandemic. Keep up the good work Andrew. Now initiate a rent freeze for the rest of us.
I was barely able to pay my huge property tax bill in April. Wasn’t able to put off property tax without a huge late payment. A good number of landlords are suffering also. We need help trying to maintain our properties. Decrease state/city property taxes now!!
Is the Gov. going to halt foreclosures for owners also in NYS?
A lot of homeowners packed up and left the first day of stay at home orders. They left and have not come back. Pass a rent freeze for those of us living here with no other place to go!
Help the people that haven’t got paid unemployment yet!! I was laid off from my job back in March. I still haven’t received anything!! Phone lines are busy. Governor help us!!

Looks like china’s going to be purchasing a lot of bargain rate real estate here in the fall.
My governor what happens on August 20th when 5 months rent is required. Who will pay when landlords evict for non payment. A rent freeze would make sense but I guess you wants your cake and eat it too while relaxing I’m your mansion.

All building owners…. send the bill to Cuomo…… make sure it’s under his name.
So he’s basically telling landlords they HAVE TO allow people to live on THEIR PROPERTY for FREE.
Where can we find more details and information regarding the moratorium online? I need to send it to my landlord.
Make it rent free permanently!!!!… plus a stimulus check each month….Then I’m good…
