Sunnyside Murder Cases Are Still Pending

This week marks the first anniversary of the arrest of Gary McGurk, an Irish national from Woodside, who allegedly strangled and stabbed his one-time Sunnyside girlfriend to death on April 26, 2009. He faces a murder charge.

Despite all of the attention at the time, McGurk’s case is still slowly moving through the Queens court system– as his case has yet to go to trial. McGurk’s next hearing date is on May 20.

The murder of Michelle Lee, 24, was particularly gruesome, since McGurk allegedly took a number of measures to make it appear that the stabbing and strangling was a sex crime. Police believe he burned her stomach with an iron and tied her up to her bed after the killing as a ruse. Since his May 21, 2009, arrest he has been held on Rikers Island.

Meanwhile Gino Florencia, who fatally shot Edison Vera, 25, and injured Miguel Llanos, 25, is currently being held on Rikers Island. Florencia, from Woodside, faces a murder charge, an attempted murder charge, and charges for the possession of a loaded fire arm. His case too is still making its way through the courts.

The shooting took place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in front of 45-55 48th Street. He was arrested in Florida five days later.

Queens elected officials secure $70 million from New York State Budget for school safety equipment in religious and independent schools
