Sunnyside’s Graffiti Cleanup Day, May 15

Sunnyside United Neighborhood Network’s (SUNN) graffiti cleanup day is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 15 at 10 a.m.

SUNN President Tony Rohling is calling on volunteers to gather in front of the Sunnyside Reformed Church, located at 48th Street and Skillman Avenue. Volunteers will be split into groups and cover a portion of the 40-block cleanup area.

Volunteers will paint over graffiti found on walls, store gates and public fixtures such as lampposts, mail boxes and overpasses. SUNN will provide paint and supplies.

Rohling noted that the organization’s strategy is to remove vandalism as quickly as it appears in order to send a message to vandals that their damage will not be tolerated in the community.

“Nothing makes our community look worse than graffiti, and few things feel better than taking an active role in getting rid of this ugly, disrespectful eyesore,” Rohling said in a statement.

Rohling recommends that volunteers wear their worst clothes.

For further information, call SUNN at 1-646-298-8669.

A Brooklyn man was indicted by a Queens grand jury on charges of manslaughter, drunk driving and other crimes for a fatal collision in Astoria that killed his long-time girlfriend and mother of their young child in February.

Ray Perez, 27, of Caton Avenue in Flatbush, was arraigned Thursday in Queens Supreme Court on a 13-count indictment charging him with vehicular manslaughter for allegedly speeding through a stop sign in Astoria, colliding with another vehicle and slamming into two parked cars, and then driving nearly four miles away to a street in Maspeth before seeking help for his 29-year-old girlfriend Bridget Enriquez, who later succumbed to her injuries.
