Classrooms in nearly 50 different elementary schools in Queens tested positive for lead, according to new data released by the Department of Education Wednesday night.

Inspectors hired by the DOE found lead-based paint in 48 borough schools where children below the age of six study, according to the data. Many of the schools have multiple classrooms where peeling lead paint was found.

In total, the department inspected 797 school buildings across the city built prior to 1985 that house students younger than six years old. More than a third of the pre-K and kindergarten buildings, 302 schools, tested positive for lead, according to Chalkbeat.

Deteriorating lead paint is especially dangerous to young children who may breathe in lead dust or swallow paint chips. According to the CDC, lead poisoning can cause damage to the brain and nervous system, learning and behavioral problems, slowed growth and development and hearing and/or speech issues.

Although lead paint was banned in New York City in 1960, it can still be found in many older buildings. The Department of Education has custodian engineers who routinely check for visual signs of peeling paint and three times a year, they formally record their findings. The data released Wednesday is the first time the information has been released to the public, according to Chalkbeat.

“Our schools are safe, and this summer we’ve enhanced our protocols and strengthened communication with families around the steps we take to prevent lead exposure for kids under six,” said Miranda Barbot, spokeswoman for the education department, in a statement to Chalkbeat.

The below Queens schools tested positive for lead-based paint, according to the data released. Schools marked with * had multiple classrooms that tested positive.

Wait why is fear-mongering about immigrants related to this story?

It’s about schools testing positive for lead. For more info, read the headline.

How much do you have to swallow or inhale for lead paint to be harmful? I mean I don’t see kids eating walls or chipped paint, so that leaves only the inhalation. Why can’t they just repaint those areas to prevent chipping, and case closed?

From dilapidated schools, to Chancellor Carranza who is mucking up the system, hiring his unqualified friends, promoting racist policies, he’s against white, Asian and it includes Black and Hispanic parents who push their kids to strive and achieve to just promote unprepared kids to further the DiBlasio political agenda. Kids that work hard will be penalized – standards being dumbed-down to favor the majority- they want to eliminate the specialized high schools — and promote the 70% who have not done the work. The kids that excel in the NYC public school system do so because of their parents and the kids themselves aspire to something better. Every child has the ability to learn – Catch them at an early age – raise the expectation – increase the school calendar year to over 200 days, add more Charters in the inner city, they have been proven to work.
