Sunnyside will celebrate the newly-installed holiday lights around the neighborhood in a ceremony set to take place tonight.

The annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony, organized by Sunnyside Shines, will take place on the north side of 40th Street and Queens Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The event celebrates the holiday-themed fixtures recently installed within the Sunnyside Business Improvement District (BID). The lights, blue and white, appear along on Greenpoint Avenue east of 42nd Street, and go through the length of Queens Boulevard from about 38th Street to 50th Street.

As in other years, “Welcome to Sunnyside” fixtures are also installed at the limits of the BID.

The evening event features live music and dance performances, with free hot chocolate and cake to go around. Santa will also pay a visit during the festivities.

The holiday lighting ceremony comes as the lights on the Sunnyside Arch, often lit to match events and other festivities, have been out for several months after being replaced just this year.

Sunnyside Shines, which help maintains the arch, said it is in the process of getting a contractor to fix the lights, and hopes they can be repaired to shine during the holiday season.

I read some of the comments on here from time to time, truly sad so many miserable people out there. Always crying , bitching, complaining! I think the lights are great, haven’t seen in any other neighborhood..Good Job!

So it’s not enough that the two restaurants on this block are so peppered with people that residents can’t even walk on the sidewalk but now we’re closing down side streets? Isn’t the spot under the train for this kinda stuff? I’m just confused at the lack of consideration for the cars that have to reverse their way out of their spots. what if a resident had an emergency? Ambulance has to navigate it’s way back to a very TIGHT 43rd ave? but hey…hot coco for the kids mmrite?

Brooklyn man indicted on manslaughter, DWI charges in deadly Astoria crash that killed the mother of his child: DA

A Brooklyn man was indicted by a Queens grand jury on charges of manslaughter, drunk driving and other crimes for a fatal collision in Astoria that killed his long-time girlfriend and mother of their young child in February.

Ray Perez, 27, of Caton Avenue in Flatbush, was arraigned Thursday in Queens Supreme Court on a 13-count indictment charging him with vehicular manslaughter for allegedly speeding through a stop sign in Astoria, colliding with another vehicle and slamming into two parked cars, and then driving nearly four miles away to a street in Maspeth before seeking help for his 29-year-old girlfriend Bridget Enriquez, who later succumbed to her injuries.
