P.S. 150 to Undergo $400,000 Auditorium Renovation

Sept. 28, 2018 By Nathaly Pesantez

P.S. 150, the elementary school with more than 1,000 students on 43rd Avenue, will soon have a revamped auditorium thanks to thousands of dollars in funding recently secured for the project, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer announced yesterday.

The school will be receiving $400,000 for the long-awaited renovation work, which has been included into the city’s fiscal year 2019 budget.

Van Bramer took to the school yesterday to celebrate news of the funding with performances from the school band and chorus.

“An auditorium is a place for a school and its community to come together, whether it’s for student performances, PTA meetings or educational assemblies,” Van Bramer said in a statement. “The dedication and talent I’ve seen from the students and teachers of PS 150 is a testament to the importance of renovating this essential space.”

The funding for auditorium renovations stems from the most recent round of participatory budgeting. While the project did not receive enough votes to be funded, it did have many supporters.

P.S. 150 is currently working with the School Construction Authority to figure out what renovations can be done with the allocated money.

Apart from an auditorium revamp, the school is also set to receive $100,000 for technology upgrades including laptop carts, desktop computers, and interactive boards.

“Our school excels in the arts,” said Carmen Parache, P.S. 150 principal. “To have a renovated auditorium only confirms to staff and students that our work is important and meaningful. Our students will be performing on a professional stage.”

They spent $400.000 in one auditorium but he left behind PS.150 with an horrible illiterate administration ????

I love the poorly educated

We can’t keep spending all this money on education.

If too many people are educated there will be no one left to vote for Trump.

Bozo principal

Until recently that principal would drive her car ~20 ft on the sidewalk @ 4oth st to avoid the light @ 43rd Ave. It took people alerting the DOE to get her to stop. Total clown.

an excellent project. however, can we get a copy of the contractors proposal? an itemized itemized estimate for the project into the public for review?

$400,000 is an absurd amount of money. the waste and/or rip-off by the contractor(s) on this project is going to be astronimical.

Another Van Bremer photo op.
Where was he this past Saturday at the Skillman fair?
A no show political hack and coward.
If he was up for re-election, he would have been there on a Skillman Ave with no bike lane.

Our guess is Vonbramer used public dollars to shut up principal about his dangerous Bicycle Lanes.

The administration at 150 is completely incompetent. The principal can barely put a sentence together. The assistant principal runs the place, and she is an idiot as well.

Even if you dislike the principal and one of the APs (which is obvious from your statement) do you not think the students, arts teachers, and school community deserve a nice upgraded auditorium?

Leave the kids alone. It’s disappointing that there are people who intentionally try to hurt little kids’ feelings on this forum.

Nice try, Tanzer. Who wrote this comment for you? It’s obviously far beyond your ability to construct a sentence. This one is not perfect, but it’s still way above your level.

Another JVB photo op. Look how good of a councilman I am. His main preoccupation is how do I get my face out there so I can raise money for my upcoming campaign.

Lawmakers secure federal funding to combat flooding in Queens after impact of Hurricane Ida and other storms

U.S. Congresswomen Grace Meng and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, announced on Jan. 7 that President Joe Biden has signed their legislation into law to address severe flooding in Queens.

The measure aims to mitigate future disasters like those caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida in September 2021, which inundated the borough with record-shattering rainfall.

Op-ed | New York’s ground lease co-ops: Our families can’t wait any longer

Jan. 14, 2025 By Michael Tang

Last December brought a long-awaited victory for New York City. Our City Council adopted the historic City of Yes housing plan, paving the way for more than 80,000 new homes by 2040 with the promise of affordability. As a longtime resident of Flushing, Queens, I naturally welcomed the news – it’s a much-needed reprieve for New Yorkers as housing costs continue to soar in the midst of an unparalleled housing crisis. But entering 2025 on the heels of this win, we residents at  Murray Hill Cooperative remain at risk — our lives are virtually unchanged because we belong to the last class of unprotected “tenants” as ground lease co-op residents. Without legislative action, more than 25,000 New Yorkers face the threat of losing their homes — homes that we own — to landowners seeking to raise our ground rent to astronomical rates.
