Hundreds of participants are set to take part in the fourth annual Sunnyside Post Mile this Saturday.
The event is for both runners and walkers, and starts at 10:00 a.m., with an opening ceremony kicking off at 9:30 a.m.
Participants are still able to register online for the event and will also be able to register on the day. However, to avoid long lines, organizers are recommending that participants sign up now and pick up their free race-day T-Shirts and bibs at either Sunnyside Community Services on Thursday (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) or at The Skillman on Friday (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.).
The event is being organized by the Sunnyside Post in conjunction with Woodside-Sunnyside Runners, a local running organization formed in 2009 that holds weekly runs and includes hundreds of active members.
All proceeds are going to Sunnyside Community Services, a multi-service, community-based, not-for-profit agency that provides programs for individuals of all ages.
A record number of sponsors have got behind the event this year.
“Without the sponsors, this event would never happen,” said Christian Murray, publisher of the Sunnyside Post. “We are very thankful to them. Every year the business community gets behind this.”
Organizers advise participants to register now—in order to be guaranteed a race-day T-shirt.
“While runners are able to register on the day, we recommend signing up now and coming down to one of the pick-up locations for your T-Shirt and bib on Thursday or Friday,” said Erica Campbell, with the Woodside-Sunnyside Runners.
The starting line for Saturday’s event will be located by Torsney/Lou Lodati Playground on 43rd Street. Participants will then turn onto Barnett Avenue, then onto 39th Avenue through to 50th Street before making two more rights and finishing at Skillman Ave (44th Street).
The roads will be closed by the NYPD for about an hour while the event takes place.
Participants are permitted to run/walk with strollers and leashed dogs are welcome– as long as they line up at the back of the race corral.
There will also be children’s dashes along Skillman Avenue. Registration costs $10 and children also get complimentary race-day T-shirts.
The significantly dashes will begin at 10:30 am, with children of different age categories (from 2 years to 9 years) lining up at 44th Street and Skillman Avenue.
There will be medals presented to the fastest three runners in both the men’s and women’s categories of the Sunnyside Post Mile, and there will also be ribbons handed out to children who participate in the Skillman Dashes.
The run-walk costs $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children, with all proceeds going to Sunnyside Community Services.
