Sunnyside’s Biriyani House has closed, and will instead be the site of a new Indian restaurant with different ownership.

Cardamom, the name of the new restaurant, will take over the 43-45 43rd St. locale, and is set to open on Aug. 27, according to Alwyn Gudinho, the owner.

Gudinho, 40, says his restaurant will serve authentic Indian food along with some dishes from Goa, his home state along India’s west coast.

Dishes, priced between $12 and $19, include xacutti (a curry made with multiple spices and prepared with chicken or lamb), vindaloo, lamb chops, chicken tikka masala, and a variety of seafood and vegan dishes. Home made Indian desserts will also be served.

Cardamom will be Gudinho’s first restaurant after working in the hospitality and restaurant industry for 20 years. He has worked in a variety of New York City Indian restaurants as a chef for the past 10 years, including Utsav in Midtown, Nirvana in Murray Hill, and even a brief stint at Saffron Garden on Skillman Avenue.

Prior to living in New York City, Gudinho worked in the Middle East and on cruise ships as a chef.

The name of the restaurant, he says, refers to the cardamom spice used widely in Indian cuisine, with the “mom” in the name as an nod to his mother and grandmother, who taught him how to cook.

curry in a hurry

Well I hope the standard improves. Growing up in Britain I had access to amazing Indian food and until recently would not touch the food at Saffron Garden. I guess they changed chef because its better now but the quality of Indian food is really bad throughout the city with the exception of a few places in Jackson Heights and Curry Hill.

Thank god! The last place was dreadful. Maybe we will finally have good Indian food in Sunnyside again!

The food was actually decent. Just kind of a sad, dated place. Hope everyone is doing well.

Please good indian food

What is a “seafood vegan dish?”

Will they serve south indian treats like idly, vada, or dosa?

The article clearly states “seafood and vegan” not seafood vegan (which does exist btw).

The word "clearly" is usually centered on the weak point of a sentence.

The article originally stated (clearly) “seafood vegan”. They updated the article.

So tell me, what is “seafood vegan”?
