Several Queens Library locations are set to host Drag Queen Story Hour events all through the month of May.
The events, which involve drag queens reading stories to children ages 3 to 8, aim to raise awareness of gender diversity and self-acceptance, all while enjoying a fun literary experience, according to the Queens Library.
The month-long series will kick off at the Woodside Library, located at 54-22 Skillman Ave., at 4 p.m on May 9.
Other locations include the Jackson Heights Library at 35-51 81st St., where a bilingual Spanish and English Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) will take place on May 10 at 3:30 p.m. A follow up event will take place on June 3.
The Elmhurst Library at 86-07 Broadway will also see a DQSH event on May 22 at 4 p.m., and a follow up on June 19.
DQSH will also travel to Astoria for a May 16 event at the Steinway Library, located at 21-45 31st St. The story time begins at 3 p.m.
Councilmember Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights), who is funding DQSH at the Jackson Heights and Elmhurst libraries, says the event is a fun way to encourage children to read.
“It is also a great way to teach them to embrace our society’s differences and diversity,” Dromm said in a statement.
For a full list of DQSH events, see the Queens Library’s list.

Shame on you people,
EL LOCO LOOKS BEAUTIFUL WITH HIS WIG ON. !!!!!!!!! ??
At least el loco has the courage to be himself. I’m proud of her/him
Save the costume and idea for Halloween..The children just might understand it a little better!!!
Omg I wish I had this when I was a kid
They can do what they want in their private lives, but PLEASE leave our children out of this “movement”… It’s a man dressed up as woman reading to children. Now is that normal…? ?
What about women who dress up like men? Where’s the outcry over that? Drag queens are really about make-up and dresses- why is it that women dress so differently? Why do some men want to do this and then go out in public? If women stopped wearing make-up, what would we learn? (I have never needed lipstick or eyeshadow. Can you say the same?)
Go back to the stone age, grandma/grandpa.
I think its wonderful! Children need to be open to all people and lifestyles.. who knows maybe theres a future drag queen in the group.
“You and Your Type” is my new band name.
My band will be called “The Trust Fund Babies”.
I don’t think my kids, both under 10 years of age, are ready to have me explain drag queens to them yet. They know there are gay people who can date, marry and love each other. But this? Not yet. They need more life experience. And as for the event, one can choose to go or not.
What is there to explain? “Some people like to dress up as the other gender for fun, like the way people do on halloween”. There.
Someone as close minded as you doesn’t deserve kids. And I say this as a straight, married woman.
I moved to Woodside 3 years ago and I’m broke, but I have an open mind and heart. Not sure what money has to do with it.
Totally inappropriate for children.
JVB- you approve of this?
Children know and understand that not all grown-ups are the same. To them, this was probably no big deal and I’ll bet most of them enjoyed it. I hope you aren’t passing your hang-ups on to the next generation.
What’s next? ..Actually, never mind… Don’t give the Library any other ( such) ideas,lol..
Shameful indoctrination of children. There’s only two genders. Anything outside of that is a mental illness.
HV – Which gender is a person who is born hermaphrodite?
Hermaphroditism is a physical condition not a mental condition. Your post is way off and shows your lack of knowledge of the topic your hating on.
And your degree and research in this area is from……?
Asking HV, not Tommy O
I got my degree at Trump University while interning at Fox News.
Aw, you don’t understand the difference between gender and sex. What an adorable little moron you are!
Drag queen reading to children? What a sick idea who ever let this happen should be ashamed of themselves
Your tax dollars hard at work!
I just cant believe trannies are being subsidized by the gov’t.
So many ignorant neighbors – what a shame for our community.
Will the children picks the stories or will it be an hour of Judy Garland biographies and Vogue articles? Where there be make up tutorials afterwards. The thread is gonna be funny , “ Can’t Wait!”
Surreal
oh man. i’m sure this article is going to bring out some of the worst and most embarassing comments sunnyside residents have to offer.
I hope not, I like to think our area is open minded and progressive, but you never know!
Progressive since you and your type moved in with your money.
I moved to Woodside 3 years ago and I’m broke, but I have an open mind and heart. Not sure what money has to do with it.
Then you’re definitely in the wrong neighborhood if you’re already broke.
Yes it started with yours.
