A new service is making its way to the Sunnyside Greenmarket this weekend, where all kinds of household items can be brought to be fixed by a small company in an effort to reduce waste.
Fixup, the name of the service, repairs items ranging from lamps, chairs, toys, ceramics, clothing, and more—a suitcase, colander, bird sculpture, and gelato machine are just some “favorites” the group has fixed, for example.
These broken items can be brought to the Sunnyside Greenmarket starting on Feb. 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and every first Saturday of the month after that, and picked up in the same location one month later.

All payments for fixed items are made online via PayPal, and are divided into four price categories from small to extra large. Small items range from $20 to $40, while extra large items go from $150 upwards. More exact estimates, however, are made once the item is dropped off and looked at. The Sunnyside Greenmarket location is part of a new effort by the company to bring their services citywide, with other green market locations planned through Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Sunnyside location is the only outlet in Queens, so far.
Fixup began as “Pop Up Repair” in 2013, and was founded by a group of backstage theater artisans frustrated by the lack of repair options in today’s throwaway world. The group has repaired over 2,000 broken items since.

The Sunnyside Greenmarket, operated by GrowNYC, is located on Skillman Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets, and is open year-round on Saturdays.

SHhhhhhhhhhhhhdont let the secret out, so many millennials are clueless about fixing anything….. i have made thousands getting stuff for free n CL and fixing it myself….
when everything has been given to them on a silver platter, what did you expect? you might think its bad now, but it will eventually balance out. it always does. either that, or nyc will have significantly more homeless millennial bums to deal with.

I love this! It annoys me no end that people do not fix or mend possessions. All people do now is make money so they can consume more.
