Third Annual Sunnyside Post Mile set for October, funds to go to Sunnyside Community Services

Aug. 7, 2017 by Nathaly Pesantez

The Sunnyside Post Mile is entering its third year, with a mid-October event in store to raise funds for Sunnyside Community Services.

The event, set for October 14, is organized by the Sunnyside Post and the Woodside-Sunnyside Runners group, and is open for people of all ages to either walk or run in a course through the streets of Sunnyside. Click here to register.

Strollers are permitted, and pets must be leashed and at the back of the event.

The course is slightly different this year—it begins by Lou Loudati Park on 43rd Street and Skillman Avenue, and goes north on 43rd Street, crosses east into Barnett Avenue and 39th Avenue (the new part of the route), turns south on 50th Street and finished with the long stretch of Skillman Avenue.

“We tweaked the route a little bit so we can run down 39th avenue,” Erica Campbell, an organizer from Woodside-Sunnyside Runners said. “It’s a little bit more scenic and we felt like it would give runners a bit more of the flavor of Sunnyside.”

The Mile will begin at 10:00 a.m., and an opening ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Later, children’s dashes will take place on Skillman Avenue at 10:45 a.m.

Medals will be given to the top three finishers for both men and women, and participation ribbons for the children’s dash.

“We are proud to be hosting the mile with the Woodside-Sunnyside Runners for a third year and are excited that it has become a large annual event much like the St Pat’s for All parade and the Taste of Sunnyside,” said Christian Murray, publisher of the Sunnyside Post.

Sunnyside Community Services, the local multi-service non-profit with beginnings in 1974, will use the funds raised to help bring services to the 14,000 people of all ages they serve yearly.

“This event is great fun, and a great example of people finding creative ways to give and to give back to their community,” Sunnyside Community Services executive director Judith Zangwill said.

Registration is $20.00 for adult and youth participating in the Mile, and registration for the Skillman Dash (children’s race) is $15.00. Participants will also be given bibs and race-day t-shirts for the event.

Online registration is open until October 12, and in-person registration will be available between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on the day of the event.

Sponsors for the event will be announced as the date approaches. Those who are interested can e-mail run@queenspost.com or click here for the 3rd Annual Sunnyside Post Mile Sponsorship Kit.

“We really want people to get out there and just have a really great time,” Campbell said.
