A movie theater will likely be moving in to a brand new office building in Sunnyside.
38-01 Queens Blvd (pre-demolition)
Developers of the nine story building going up at 38-01 Queens Boulevard are in talks with a major movie theater chain to move in to the building, according to David Koptiev, owner of Platinum Realty, which is developing the property with Curbcut Urban Partners and RW Real Estate Group.
Koptiev said that the movie theater would likely occupy the first two floors of the building, or about 37,000 square feet. He would not specify which movie theater company is likely to occupy the space due to the confidential nature of their talks.
“There aren’t really any movie theaters in the Queens Boulevard corridor,” Koptiev said. “There’s a huge gap between Long Island City and Rego Park without a theater, so it would be a good addition to the area.”
The development of the building, called the QB38 Tower, was announced about a year ago after Curbcut Urban Partners purchased the property for $12,070,000 and partnered with Platinum.
The rest of the building will primarily hold state of the art medical offices and community facility space, Koptiev said.

The building will also have outdoor terraces and a 140-space parking garage in the building.
Koptiev said the building would tentatively be completed and open in about two years.
The announcement comes two years after Center Cinemas, which was located at 42-17 Queens Blvd, closed.

Yes please!!! Build it asap. That is definitely a big thing we are lacking in the neighborhood. As bad as that little theatre was at least I could go to a movie on my day off without traveling to the city. TheCurlicue man who owned that property rents it and the Dime Bank to the movie company that shoots the show Blue Bloods. Yes if one of the theaters could be for foreign flicks or similar that they show at the Paris Theatre. And could u have those amazing seats like barka loungers they are incredibly comfortable. Fresh popped popcorn!! Not too much to ask, we deserve it !!

Who wants a movie theater. There is a reason why there is less and less of them around. They’re annoying. People on cell phones, some guys dumb asss girl causes drama. Come up with something thats done in this century maybe?
I was born in Woodside and lived there until 1985. We grew up with the 43rd Street movie, Bliss theatre, Sunnyside and Center theaters. I am glad that a new movie theatre may be on the way. Hopefully, it will be kept clean, have a good staff, show current and classic movies at affordable prices.
I love going back to Woodside for visits….a great neighborhood.
i went to a movie last year and i was disgusted with putting up with like 20 minutes of promos clips trailers coming attractions in all 12 theaters all sorts of crap before the movie………
never again, only saving grace tickets were $6 half price.
A new movie theater is a welcome addition to our community. I hope they devote at least one screening room for art movies. Kew Gardens Cinema is great but pretty far. It would also be nice if they had some specials for kids. The Center was a dump but had a kids special of a movie and a snack tray with popcorn, a beverage and gummy bears for $10.

Awesome! Sounds like a great idea…especially if its a smaller movie theater company like Alamo Drafthouse that does interesting programming and events!!

Sounds good, more convenient than the one in Astoria. Hopefully this one will enforce basic decorum for its patrons/employees, unlike that so called Center Cinema.
This is a great plan – a new building and developer with positive intentions for the neighborhood.

It is a good idea. A movie theater will also bring many customers to spend money in this part of town. Sunny side is going to be developed in many locations already. It is not going to stop. This development is good for everyone.

It will be somewhat isolated down there. What other community facilities are there? Affordable offices for non-profits?
It’s an area that is attracting more and more pedestrian traffic. As a member of the YMCA, I’ve watched this neighborhood grow more and more appealing.
Center Cinemas didn’t close. It was forced out of business by a greedy developer who just wants to flip the property.
But nothing is there now? So why would they close it with no “flip” to profit off of?
It was not a nice place to watch a movie and was kept up very poorly.

It was one of the crappiest theaters around. Most of the people who live around here stopped going to it long ago. I know I sure did.

Put down the crack pipe, you’ve had enough, South Side Johnny. What it did was show current films at discount, under $10, prices. It was a MAJOR asset to the neighborhood for people who didn’t want to get ripped off and have to pay $15+ a ticket and and get shoved around by hoards of people at a crowded multiplex.

And the urban sprawl continues, spilling out of LIC into Sunnyside! The days when you didn’t even have to even tilt your head up to see the big blue beautiful sky are numbered. Each year we become more and more like Manhattan, where giant buildings block the horizon and you stand in the canons of their shadows.
This building is literally an unused warehouse next to a carwash and several other warehouses. A 9 story building is going to ruin your beautiful blue sky? Walk a block in literally any direction.
I’m happy they are going to use the space for something useful that Sunnyside would benefit from.

Don’t you think that’s what they said when they put up the Citi Bank skyscraper? Now look at the place! Cranes everywhere erecting more tall buildings – have you been on the QBB Upper Level On-Ramp? Might as well be driving through the Met Life building in Manhattan. Sure you can walk a block now, but the same could have been said in LIC 10 yrs ago, literally.
the citibank building went up an entire decade before the rest of the buildings in LIC started going up, which was 27 years ago.
This building was never a warehouse. It was home to a nearly 100 year old manufacturing firm that was the last of its kind on Queens Blvd. It provided jobs that supported thousands of families over the years. It was part of the manufacturing base that made NY great. Today, NY is a bit less great.
The manufacturing base of NYC is no longer the force it once was. For many reasons. almost everything is being manufactured elsewhere and this is not going to change. Yes, it’s a shame that those jobs no longer exist but NYC has been changing for centuries and hasn’t relied on manufacturing jobs for decades. Its ability to change is what makes NYC great (greater than ever, if you ask me.) Many other cities were unable to adjust to these changes and are now mere shadows of what they once were. LIC has not been a center for manufacturing for many many years. It’s slightly sad that the last manufacturing firm of its kind has gone out of business but hardly unexpected and not really as significant as you would like us to believe.
I’m an old geezer who grew up in Sunnyside (moved away in 1955 at age 20). In my youth I was all over Sunnyside, Woodside, Astoria and LIC on foot and on my bicycle. The homes of nationally-known products were everywhere to be found; Sunshine Biscuits, Adams Gum, Brewster Aircraft, Breyers Ice Cream, Louis Sherry Candy, CN disinfectant, Sklar (surgical instruments), S.B. Thomas (bread and English muffins), Swingline Staplers (A relative Johnny-come-lately) and many more that this old gray head can bring to mind. Now, in later life, I often look back fondly on my youth in Sunnyside (43-07 42nd St.)
