A six-story building is going up on Roosevelt Avenue where a two-story house is currently located.

Plans were filed with the Dept. of Buildings Tuesday for a six-story mixed use building at 54-21 Roosevelt Avenue. The structure will consist of ground floor retail, second floor health care facilities and four stories of apartments. The development would include seven dwelling units.

So it’s a good thing this will increase the amount of housing by creating four floors of apartments, right?

IT’S A SHAME. THESE HOME ARE BEING REPLACED BY LARGER RESIDENCES.INSTEAD OF SOCCER FIELDS. YET, NOT A SINGLE THOUGHT HAS BEEN TO CREATE SOCCER FIELDS FOR THE YOUTH OF THE COMMUNITY. YOUNGSTERS WHO PLAY SOCCER AND SPORTS TOGETHER OFTEN STUDY TOGETHER AND BECOME SCHOLARS. NOT ENOUGH SOCCER FIELDS FOR WOODSIDE’S POTENTIAL ,SCHOLARS.

There is no link between soccer and being a scholar. We need housing. This building has served its purpose; no one really wants to live there anymore.

What we need is a pool hall, where kids can play together and also study together. That’s right, pool; rhymes with school. Right here in Woodside. We gotta figure out a way to keep the kids moral because an idle mind is the devil’s playground. Let them leave school, pop over and play some pool, then hit the library down the block for some valuable study time. That library’s got loads of books: Books, with a capital B that rhymes with P that stands for Pool! Anyway, you get the idea. This way: no soccer hooligans.

The house was ugly, neglected, and badly needed repair in 1970. The work done about 10 years ago removed the exterior mouldings and put vinyl siding on the exterior to give it a “new” appearance. It’s one of the last sorry wood frame houses that were constructed before 1917 so it became virtually unlivable with the arrival of the elevated line to Corona 99 years ago. It shall not be missed.

If I remember correctly someone went to a lot of trouble to restore that house about twenty years ago. It’s height and beauty is evidence of a more peaceful era of Woodside history. I’m sad to see it fall before the onslaught of “progress.”
