Police close off 54th Street between Roosevelt and Skillman Avenues

A 34-year-old man who was struck repeatedly in the head with a metal pipe in Woodside early Saturday has died and the police have arrested and charged the alleged perpetrator.
The incident took place at 1:45 a.m. Saturday when police received a call that men were fighting near Roosevelt Avenue and 54th Street.
When police arrived, Martin Quiej was found lying on the ground with lacerations to his head at 41-24 54th St. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Quiej, who lived on 54th Street in Woodside, died Tuesday succumbing to his injuries.
The police recovered the pipe on the scene.
The police arrested Victor Mendoza, a 21-year-old Woodside resident, on the scene for the attack. He was charged on March 6, prior to Quiej’s death, with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
The police are trying to locate another man allegedly involved who was described as a Hispanic male, wearing blue jeans, black shoes and a gray jacket.

this article has a lot of info (though it lists the location as Sunnyside Gardens…sure to upset the gentry). it says police actually got both suspects but only charged Mendoza. that’s the first i’ve heard of that tidbit, but it would make sense since the other guy in the video seemed to be trying to calm Mendoza down. it also says Quiej came out with the pipe but Mendoza got it off him.

the cops need to investigate, go over those videos. I agree with what was said who stands and watches, records yet no one saw anything fucking pussies bring everything to the light.
Was this whole confrontation a result of some shady dealings this business was doing on the side? We don’t know what happened before the video started rolling. What kind of store is open at 1:45 in the morning “editing children’s videos” on a Saturday? It just sound suspicious. The attack also sounds premeditated to some degree. How many pieces of lead pipe are there just lying around on the street–and do you think you could locate one by chance in the middle of the night while flying off in a spontaneous rage?

Shame on all the people who watched or filmed this attack cowering in your homes with the lights off. How long did it take to call the cops? Until he was being beaten? If this was truly a neighborhood , people would have come out of their homes to help defend a local mom and pop store. At the very least, call the cops and then yell at them that the cops are on their way. If they knew people were watching maybe it would’ve stopped before it escalated. No one wants to get involved because it’s not them they could give a crap, they’d rather film it for social media, snitches get stitches, they think they’ll get deported if they speak with the cops, cops are the enemy, etc etc. Pick any one of those reasons…God bless his family, may he rest in peace.
did you watch the video, tough guy? this all happened because someone DID come out and try to stop the altercation. that good samaritan was beaten to death and his children will grow up fatherless. i hope for the sake of YOUR family you would make the same decision that you just railed against: stay inside, call the cops, and get the best video evidence you can.

I am by no means a tough guy but he was pretty much obligated to help out his co worker. You don’t have to be physically involved to be involved. Like I said, a few neighbors yelling out their windows to break it up, the cops on on their way may have helped. Im not throwing blame around so much as maybe the next time something like this happens people will get involved. I find it funny though how you want people to get involved now and watch a video to try and catch the other suspect. But I doubt anyone will for the same reasons I listed in my first post.
start with those kids who hang around outside Patron’s Deli all day acting tough. haven’t seen much of them since this happened. if one of them isn’t the other guy, they probably know who is.

2 questions: 1) what would a neighborhood watch have done differently? this guy came out to try to break up the argument and died for it. neighborhood watch will be unarmed and the same would happen to them. can you muster a crowd of 5 or 10 people, at 2am, within the 30 seconds it took for this guy to get beat? 2) if you think it’s such a good idea, why don’t you get off the internet and do something about it instead of just posting and posting and posting about it?

5 or 10? haha laughable. It would be everyone’s involvement whether its actionable or witnesses. If resident’s trust each other they would know who is who or someone that does.
It’s like how the Italian-American’s used to run things in Howie Beach and Little Italy. There was a woman who was unfortunately raped in Little Italy and within 24 hours the guy was dead with a slight throat in the street. It stopped traffic. A little much but violence other than that was extremely rare.

Hey Chump! Did you watch the video? It looks like everybody involved in the fight was hispanic. I am glad they reported this. It seems that most of the time when a person’s race is mentioned on the news in regards to a crime, is when he/she is white. Bravo to whomever recorded the video and submitted it to police. Great job done by the NYPD. They are the best police force in this country. What a tragic loss for the family of Martin Quiej, who was only trying to help another human being. King, you either don’t live around there OR are deliberately spreading misinformation. That area of Woodside is filled with Hispanics and Asians. And that block is mostly Hispanic. The person cops arrested was hispanic – Victor Mendoza. This has nothing to do with race, even though a racial comment was captured in the video. So please get your information straight as people can be misled by your misinformation.
HThe neighborhood is mixed. Spanish, Asian, Irish and some Italian among other nationalities. Those two blocks have a few more Spanish than not.
BUT the other offender is Irish off the boat. He has been barred from most of the local bars and is known by some to be unbalanced. He was parrested due to lical tips.
