Sunnyside Shines Gears Up For Holiday Season, with Gift Guide and Lights

Nov. 20, 2015 By Laura A Shepard

Sunnyside residents should be able to do a significant portion of their holiday shopping within the 11104 zip code this year.

The Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District has put together its second annual gift guide for the season, featuring ideas and coupons from 21 local stores.

Terrariums from Sunnyside Florist and hoop earrings from ADL Jewelry, both of which are on Queens Boulevard, are among the featured items.

“We hope the #SunnysideGiftGuide inspires Sunnysiders to visit local stores for their holiday shopping this year,” said Rachel Thieme, executive director of Sunnyside Shines. “We have uncovered lots of unique gifts in the neighborhood and we hope businesses have a strong holiday
season.”

Residents have received a postcard in the mail outlining the deals and Sunnyside Shines continues to highlight featured items on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Staff will distribute copies at the Sunnyside Holiday Lighting Ceremony and the Small Business Saturday celebration.

Santa will be in town for the The Sunnyside Holiday Lighting Ceremony on Mon. Nov. 23, as will The Fabulous Fezziwigs, a trio of Dickensian carolers and dancers from the McManus School of Irish Dance. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. in front of Bing’s Hallmark at 45-15 Greenpoint Avenue.

The following Saturday, Nov. 28, is Small Business Saturday, a promotion to encourage residents to buy gifts from local retailers. A celebration in Bliss Plaza, at Queens Boulevard and 46th Street, will begin at noon and attendees will receive free bags.

Sunnyside Shines encourages shoppers to post photos on social media with the hashtag #SunnysideGiftGuide and @SunnysideShines will repost their favorites. More information is available at www.sunnysideshines.org.
