Smash Old Jack-O-Lanterns Into Compost At Sunnyside Greenmarket

Last year's Pumpkin Smash

Pumpkin Smash 2014

Nov. 6, 2015 Staff Report

Instead of throwing out this Halloween’s jack-o-lanterns, Sunnyside residents can smash them apart with their neighbors on Saturday.

The second annual Pumpkin Smash at the Sunnyside Greenmarket will take place from 10 a.m to 2 p.m., rain or shine.

NYC Compost Project staff will be on hand to help smash pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns apart, then bring them back to the Queens Botanical Garden, where they will be turned into compost.

“Pumpkin Smash takes something very fun – smashing pumpkins to smithereens – and uses Pumpkin Smash 2014it to engage and educate New Yorkers about the importance of compost, with the aim to continue building a culture of composting in New York City,” Compost Project coordinator Jeremy Teperman said in a statement.

“By hosting Pumpkin Smash at Sunnyside Greenmarket, we’re also highlighting the connections between the practice of composting and growing, cooking and eating healthy food,” he added.

The event will include refreshments, live music, a raffle and educational materials about composting and recycling.

The Sunnyside Greenmarket is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Skillman Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets.
