There will be plenty of arts, crafts and music on display under the Sunnyside Arch this Saturday and the next.
Sunnyside Shines, which oversees the Business Improvement District, will be hosting two events– a children’s fair on Saturday, August 1, and a jazz concert on Saturday, August 8.
Both events will be held next to the Sunnyside Arch and the BID will be setting up tables and chairs for spectators. The events are free.
The Kids Arts Fair (2 p.m.-6 p.m.) is largely for children ages 4 and up. Kids are invited to participate in hands-on craft making and the day will also feature face painting, games and music. A performance of “Funikijam” will take place at 3 p.m.
Meanwhile the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Concert, named after the famous jazz musician who lived in Sunnyside, will take place on August 8. The event will go from 2pm through 7pm.
This year’s concert features a vintage 1920s theme and includes groups such as the Sunnyside Drum Corps, the Sunnyside Social Club and the Sunnyside Wolverines.
A dance floor will be set up in the street.
Prior to the August 8 concert, the southwest corner of 46th and Queens Blvd (by the Smoke Shop) will be renamed Luke Adams Way, after the late Sunnyside advocate and resident.
Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer will be in charge of the unveiling.
“I am deeply happy and grateful about Councilman Van Bramer adding Luke’s name to the Sunnyside Arch area, a landmark Luke helped install,” said Patricia Dorfman, a long-time friend of Adams. “It will soothe many of our hearts to see his name when we pass, showing that his work has not past unnoticed.”

I think we are very lucky to have such programs in our neighborhood. There are many neighborhoods with absolutely nothing happening. Kudos to Sunnyside Shines and all those involved in the planning and organizing of these events. Great job y’all!
This all nice and good but when is the 108th Precint Capt. going to do something about the drug dealing and the homeless drinking all day &partying/sleeping overnight in the parks @51st Street?
Instead of armchair quarterbacking I hope you’ll attend this event and speak directly to the NYPD officers who will be on site. Maybe you could relay your grievance directly to them and ask for their assistance?
I hope the Sunnyside Slipnuts will be there
