Irish Boxing Champ to be in Sunnyside Sunday For a Meet & Greet

May 10, 2015 By Michael Florio

Get ready to rumble.

Andy Lee, the current World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight champion, will be making an appearance at Maggie Mae’s, located at 41-15 Queens Blvd, on Sunday at 5:30pm.

The bar will be offering a free meet and greet with Lee, who will be taking photos and signing autographs for customers. He is expected to stay until 8 pm.

“People will have the opportunity to meet and speak to the champ,” said James Moore, the owner of Maggie Mae’s. “It should be a good day.”

Lee, 30, has had 37 professional fights with a record of 34 wins, two losses and one draw, with 24 of those wins coming via knockout.

Moore met Lee when both were amateurs on the Irish boxing team in 2003. The two have remained friends throughout the years.

Moore, 37, went professional in 2004, going 17-3 in his 20 professional fights, with 10 of those wins by knockout. While he is from Ireland, he only fought there once, with the rest occurring in the U.S. He retired four years ago.

Moore took over Maggie Mae’s in February, after working as a bartender for the past six years. He decided to take it over because he knew the business and the area.

“Sunnyside is a great neighborhood,” he said. “I know the people, the customers and the neighborhood.”

Before Lee shows up on Sunday there will be traditional Irish music.
