A large fire gutted a Sunnyside building on 42nd Street (by Queens Blvd) Saturday night leaving the residents of 20 apartments on the street.
In the 20 degree cold weather, police had barricaded the building off and residents were not allowed back in to the premises.
The back of the building was in such disrepair, boarded up with plywood, that residents have been told that they cannot move back in for several months.
Police were blocking access to the building, located at 45-12 42nd Street, fearing the residents’ belongs might be stolen.
A resident claimed a cigarette butt was what caused the fire. However, this was not confirmed by police.
The front door is chained up and a vacate the premises order is in place.

Thanks for the update. I initially thought something happened at the gas station because that’s where I saw all the fire trucks.
It was a horrible start to the year. The Red Cross found hotel rooms for 9 families, totalling 17 adults and 12 children.
