A Sunnyside Street was co-named after a resident who dedicated his life to local teenagers on Saturday.
Jerry Ingenito, a well-known basketball coach who died in January at the age of 52, was recognized by the community in a street co-naming that saw 38th Street named after him.
Ingenito’s 30-year plus coaching career influenced the lives of hundreds of teenagers, including Lamar Odom, Speedy Claxton, Derrick Phelps and Khalid Reeves. He coached at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Youth Organization in Sunnyside, Christ the King, and Queens College.
“This neighborhood is better off today because of what he did for the community,” said Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer. “With this street name people will always be reminded of what he did.”
Recently the Sunnyside/Woodside Boys and Girls Club named a summer basketball league after the late Sunnysider at St. Teresa School in Woodside.

There is an article in today’s Daily News, Queens section about Jerry along with a photo of his parents. Apparently he had been very sick over the years with 52 operations and a kidney transplant…diabetes related. So for you naysayers he was one who deserved to be remembered. Sept.29.
Don’t worry, we’ll run out of streets soon enough.
This happens so often now, it’s not exactly a big event.
You can petition for name changes at the Sunnyside Community Office of Urban Renewal and Development. It’s located on the corner of Jerry Ingenito Way and Benjamin Wheeler Place.
City council votes on street naming. All names get lumped in one bill. Council members sponsor names for their respective districts. There is no REAL debate.

Can we vote on street names?
Meanwhile, half the street signs are completely faded.
every week their seems to be a new nameing of a street? why and who picks and choses people to get their name on a street sign? boggles me.
Excellent way to memorialize Mr. Ingenito!
Let the fun begin…
