A Sunnyside liquor store is opening on 46th Street in a location that used to be occupied by a 99 cent store.
The store, located at 45-24 46th Street, will be called the Sunny Side Wine & Liquor Warehouse. The liquor store is likely to be large, since the retail space is nearly 3,000 sq ft.
The owner could not be reached for comment.
The store had been occupied by Grand 99 Cent Store until May 2012. However, it closed its doors claiming it did not earn enough to pay $17,000 in rent.

There used to be a liquor store right where the beauty supply stores is years ago. Does this mean there’s going to be a ice cream shoppe opening soon too? & how about a shoe store? I’m kidding but seriously there needs to be a deli around here that is open 24 hours. I can’t afford Mexican food trucks every night & the tamale lady doesn’t come out at night sometimes.
I live in the neighborhood and would like to have a 1 stop liquor store .. hope it’s descent with good selection of wines and spirits .. I am sure the store will do good given the diverse community in the neighborhood and a big food market right across.. i wish good luck to the owners and hope the store opens before holidays..
Me thinks a liquor store was much needed…who wants to go all the way to Lowerys anyways…Smart Businessman…
Excellent, won’t have to walk very far for my wines. Keep in mind that there is also a large liquor store at Liquidators on 48th St. Excellent prices.

Now, lets be serious. Liquor stores do not make alcoholics anymore than bakeries make fat people. Come on….
Now this is bad. Why is a large liquor store opening? This neighborhood does not need more alcoholics. A bookstore should have been open instead and I’m sure there are plenty of bookworms here.
From what I can see, the “ice cream” store is going to be a yogurt store. Thanks, but I wanted real ice cream. Has anyone been to the rice pudding shop in Little Italy? I think it’s just off of Mulberry. Sinfully delicious- they have like 30 amazingly intense flavors. Can’t imagine getting excited over frozen yogurt.
I was hoping for another nail salon.
If all the people who say they want a bookstore in this neighborhood pool their money, maybe they could open one. It’s easy when it’s someone else taking the financial risk for what you want.

@Roxy, while that might be the state of things overall, people are still willing to try. Two indie bookstores just opened in Astoria. If it can happen in Astoria, why not Sunnyside?
What stores the neighborhood needs is not the relevant question. What people with money to invest in a new store are willing to open, is. What people are willing to buy, is too.
Nobody needs alcohol. Lots of people want it though.
The lack of parking doesn’t seem to hurt the Key Foods supermarket directly across the street. In fact, the liquor store will probably benefit from Key shoppers exiting on 46th Street after making their purchases.
I hope they use “Sunnyside,” not “Sunny Side.”
No book stores will be coming to Sunnyside. If you read a major story in the latest issue of New York Magazine, store sales of books have dropped to an all-time low due to competition from Amazon and other internet sources. The mighty Barnes & Noble is on the verge of bankruptcy, and will probably fold like Borders, which had been its only rival.
So we get another liquorstore… please do not forget the one called ” Bills” down 43 st and 43 ave on the conrer has been there for years…nothing fancy… but we have not parking but alot of walk in traffic… and a very busy area for a iiquor store…best of luck to them…. when is that famly restuarnt and book store comming and a good jean store… and we do have an ice cream store opeing up soom on greenpoint…. go sunnyside!!!!

I was in that little shop on GP once, but I like to walk around and contemplate my purchases. That shop was so small; I felt they were watching me, waiting for me to make up my mind. O well, I imagine their days are numbered.
SouthSider, i love your post. Funny. :). Yet true! I adore Lowry’s. been going there for 12 years and they absolutely have better prices than brooklyn, queens and even NJ. Although i certain,y welcome a liuor store over a 99 cent store. The small place on Gpt Ave… I wish them well but the son can be a little off putting and there is an awful smell in there in the summertime.

Of all the things I would have thought we needed on that block, a liquor store was not one of them. Lowery is never crowded, from what I see, and there is that little shop on Greenpoint. Does our neighborhood really need another one? There’s very little traffic driving by, and hardly any parking available. We’ll see, I guess.
Let’s hope this starts a price war with Lowery’s, which has had the area pretty much to itself for decades.
If any store is affected by this, it’s the small liquor place on Greepoint across from the jehovas witness building. They’re nothing fancy, just a convenient place to pick up a bottle or two when you want to get loaded and don’t want to walk over to Lowery’s. This new place will get a lot of people coming off the Bliss st station.
I hope it is a good one with lots of variety, Lowery is fine, but their selection is limited when it comes to good wine and whiskey. I usually go to BJs or Costco to get good wine. I have not been disappointed. Hopefully the place also stays classy.
I absolutely LOVE Lowery’s but it is a bit far from me. Hopefully this one will be at least as nice, if not nicer than Lowery’s.

I seem to recall the beauty shop right next to it was a liquor store years ago.
I wish the new owners luck but I find that Lowery is not just one of the better liquor and wine shops in Sunnyside but possibly the city. On Saturdays, there’s often some young women giving out free promotional samples of some new liqueur or vodka. Great store.
Better than a 99 cents store IMO
