A first floor kitchen fire broke out inside an apartment building at 51-04 Skillman Ave. on Thursday night.
When firefighters arrived on the scene the fire appeared fairly innocuous–until they noticed it was located near an old-fashioned dumbwaiter.
“If flames get in there they’ll shoot to the roof and get behind the walls,” said Deputy Chief Mark Ferran, who was on the scene. “In a building this size it would be a multiple alarm fire in no time.”
While such damage did not occur and no one was injured the FDNY took a very cautious approach in dealing with the fire due to the location of the dumbwaiter.
A large number of FDNY vehicles were called to the scene and Skillman Ave. between 49 to 52nd Street was closed off to traffic for about an hour.
