On Saturday, Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer held his 12th co-naming of a street since he took office in January 2010.
This time a street was co-named in honor of Carlo A. Lanzillotti, a New York state senator who represented the Sunnyside/Woodside district in the 1950s and who served the nation in World War II.The councilman co-named 41st Street and 48th Avenue, “Carlo A. Lanzillotti Place.”
Lanzillotti’s legislation led to the NYS Boxing Commission and laws that brought fire retardants to tenement buildings. The Senator lived near the intersection at 41st St. and 48th Ave. His daughter Leonore said, “Oh my God. He would’ve been very touched….This was long overdue.”

I’d be happy if the city would just stop naming things after Kennedys.
Naming the Queensborough Bridge after Ed Koch, a lousy mayor, also annoyed me to no end.
No disrespect to the former Senator but naming of streets has gotten out of hand. Thousands of additional street signs, with names of people no one recognizes, plus all the cost of approving the sign and putting it up.
The city has a budget problem – this should be limited to 25 per year.
Senator Lanzillotti was a Republican: the Party no one must speak of, lest its existence be acknowledged. Had he been a Democrat, the author of this piece would, I have little doubt, have mentioned it.
God Bless the Senator, his daughter, and this family’s achievement.
Sounds like he was someone who deserves the recognition. Congrats to the proud family.
