April 15, 2012 Staff Report
A group of restaurant and bar owners along Skillman Ave. is hosting a pub crawl next Saturday.
The establishments that are participating in the event are: the Copper Kettle, Aubergine Café, The Brogue, Murphy’s Bar, Quaint, Flynn’s Garden Inn, Claret, and The Dog and Duck.
This will be the second “bar/restaurant hop” put on by the group. The first was on Jan. 26 that attracted more than 100 participants.
“Our aim is to introduce people to new places,” said Tim Chen, the owner of Quaint, who is an organizer of the event.
Attendees must register for the pub crawl at the Copper Kettle, located at 50-24 Skillman Ave., between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. They will be provided with bracelets that will allow them to get their first drink half price at each location. The event begins from the time of registration and will end late.
To participate, pub crawlers must bring $5 worth of canned food when they register. That food is donated to the local food pantries.
The event takes place on the same day the Kiwanis Club is holding its street fair on Skillman Avenue between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

I think l’ll do the survey. I know all the pints would be lovely.
Ps. I have many many regular customers who live in dif states and every time they come to ny they come to visit me and I hav NEVER once had a complaint about my pouring the perfect pint.
To “allow me to retort” I take offense at ur comments about bartenders not being able to pour a proper pint of guinness. Don’t tar everyone with the same brush. I have been a bartender for 21 years in this country and I pour a pretty dam good pint of guinness. I guess u haven’t been to all the irish bars in Sunnyside. Why not do a survey and see where u can get a really good pint?

….and so another thread on ths site gets hijacked into being racism topic.
I’m sorry Marilyn had that experience. I hope it doesn’t happen again. They get good musicians. Kettle is good also. I’m surprised about the bartender not saying anything because I have heard him say things to people who use bad language and I have seen him call cabs for people who cannot hold their liquor. I wish Quaint were open later at night.
@marilyn
That’s up to you how much you want to divulge and if you don’t want to patronize a certain pub, that’s entirely your choice. That said, you’ve basically smeared a good neighborhood establishment and its patrons and are unwilling to back up your claim. For all anyone knows, somebody said “black” instead of “African-American” or maybe criticized Al Sharpton or 0bama or said something that isn’t really racist at all except in the minds of politically correct zealots.
If you are going to make harsh accusations, have the decency to back them up.
@allow me to retort
I don’t feel the need to be more specific, however I will clarify as they were not “racist” as that really designates an action where one has power or control over another. They were prejudicial comments and I still don’t feel like they “should” be described. I didn’t make the comment so that my experience could be dissected on this message board and others judge if in fact it was wrong. It happened, it happens everywhere but I for one won’t be returning to spend my money in a place where I was subjected to prejudicial comments made by more than one person on more than one occassion.
@marilyn
You should be more specific about what racist comments you heard or were subjected to. To be frank, people are offended by just about anything these days and the term “racist” is tossed around casually so there’s no way to really know what you experienced unless you can be more detailed.
Marilyn, I’m so sorry to hear that.
I don’t drink at Murphys as much as the Brogue or some other spots but I’ve never heard anything like that while I was there including when some people of color were in the bar.
Still, if that’s what you are being subjected to, then that’s BS and you are right not to patronize them.
A shame, as there is no better place to watch a hockey game then Murphys.
I know that this is off topic but as a person of color in Sunnyside, I do not feel welcome in Murphy’s. I have been there on more than one occassion and things have been said by some of the older folks. Murphys may have a new look but unfortunately it’s the same old crowd. I would rather spend my money at one of the higher priced places in the area. @ Raquel- the bartender is very cute however when I was there recently, he did not respond when a racist comment was said in front of him.
I think almost all the places in Sunnyside pour a lovely guinness. i don’t miss a thing while I sit and have a few cocktails.
great, a nice vomit walk down skillman the next morning. anyone interested?
I too enjoy having a Murphys at Murphys.
Murphy’s has a cute bartender who also has a good voice. They also get good bands. He deserves a big tip!
@eyes
I will give them a whirl this weekend.
I miss the days I was in Ireland where they let the pint stand a minute or two, fill it some more then shave the head off before pouring a wee bit more in.
The cheapskates that run pubs in this country have no idea.
For a proper Guiness, go to McGuinesses. They allow the beer to sit for a few minutes before serving. Something important happens in the waiting period.
For a good pint of Murphys go to Murphys. I ordered a Guiness there the other night and the barkeep actually told me they were running low and could I live with a Murphys!
>>>Retort, do you mean Charlie Wrangle, as in Wrangle Jeans? That would be cool, and you probably wouldn’t have had to work as a bartender. On the tax issue, that’s a different subject, an apples and cucumber type of comparison, and I wonder about the percentage of bar receipts that was used by the IRS to derive a tip amount. My guess is the amount computed by percentage was less than the actual dollar amount you received in tips. So, at the end of the day, you came out ahead on the tax on tips issue.
Sounds like a great idea. I’d like to go, will see if I can make it.
@oppressed masses
Let me play devil’s advocate here. In my bar tending days over a decade ago, I recall that I was taxed on a percentage of the bar receipts regardless of whether I was tipped or not. Basically, I paid tax on tips I never got. The government always got its pound of flesh from me even if I only got eight ounces. Maybe I should have changed my name to Charlie Wrangle.
These things always happen on weekends I can’t go 🙁
If the service sucks, such as when a bartender gives me a pint of Guinness that is one third foam and charges me five bucks for it, then he or she doesn’t deserve a tip. It’s been ages since I had a pint of Guinness that was poured properly. In a neighborhood that prides itself on its Irish heritage, that’s a shame.
Bitchy, other than a money grab, why should patrons based their tip on a fictitious amount not paid? I tip based on the level of service, for example I tip more in Murphy’s and The Kettle than in the other places listed because I think I get better service in those places. Should a person having a martini have to pay more tip than someone having a less costly drink, for the same level of service? Should the tip be based on the amount including tax or pre-tax? I expect I know your answer: the tip should be based on the highest possible amount. That’s fine, but again it should depend on the quality of the service and not on the cost of the goods.
Please remember to tip on the pre-discounted price…
Is it Ok to bring an empty thermos bottle to pour 1/2 price unused drinks into (especially toward the latter part of the tour)?
@JK Wilson
Perhaps you are in favor of Retort Reform.
allow_me_to_retort,
Are you actually “allow(ed) to retort” if you post first? Or, are you “retort(ing)” to the original post?
PS
I hope you have fun on the crawl….
Nice idea. First drink at half price means to get the best value you move on to the next pub after just one drink. With eight pubs participating, most people will be able to get a decent buzz. Let’s just hope they have the sense to take a cab home after if they live any distance away.
