Such an interesting and diverse range of comments- I’ve never “eaten here” but I get their gyro on Turkish bread to go and it’s delicious. If they had some violations, they were probably addressed and I’m thinking that we should all move on. This very public proclamation of a restaurant’s grade is a new and probably difficult thing to weather; more importantly is how an establishment responds after they are graded. I think they will be okay- I am going to try the falafel sandwich next!
(It’s sad when someone right away thins “bribe.” Probably their first thought when they get in trouble. Such a lack of faith in humanity! Don’t trust anyone…)
Believe it or not people can get very sick from poorly handled food, and while we check restaurants we don’t inspect the kitchens of friends and family. Would your kitchen pass? Maybe not acoording to this article http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/29/dining/29inspector.html?pagewanted=all
You can tell who never worked in food service in high school and college from the comments on these types of posts. If you read the violations, they’re all pretty minor, that just requires the management to keep on top of the staff a bit more.
I remember once finding a nest of baby mice in a dry storage room at a restaurant I worked at. It was a clean place. But you know, mice like food.
Also, the lentil soup with homemade bread is incredible.
I’m puzzled as to why anyone would have a “People actually eat there?!” response. I ate there before the expansion. Great felafel sandwiches too. The staff is really nice.
and yet ANOTHER restaurant closed and yet ANOTHER restaurant I will not frequent anymore. I guess I will be saving money by cooking at home.
Even though they are now open and lets say eligible for an A++++… I will not eat in this dump merely on the principle that these owners have no respect for their patrons.
lets see…
Lentinis…. check
Mangal ….. check
Chips…. not closed yet!
Mangal rules! best Turkish. Turkish, by the way, not Lebanese like El Shater; which I also love, but totally different food. I hope they open again, soon. Hey, Christy Boy, your head is Chock full of nuts.
I love this place. Great food, friends, and people. Free mice for the kids!
Mangal Rocks! Always fresh, always tasty, never a problem with their food.
Do not worry about this “Health Department”…A popular Woodside eatery has a “Grade Pending” and rightfully so…I had found a roach in my food…yuk..needless to say , we have never been back….( this happened before the ratings ….over 1 yr. ago.) I appreciate the ratings.
Glad they managed to cough up the bribe money.
The food at Mangal is good. I wonder about this “Health Department”.
The rival Oasis on corner of QB and 40th Street just got hit with a “B” sanitation rating, but they have it displayed among Christmas decorations in the very last window on 40th Street. Isn’t it supposed to be displayed at the entrance?…Also, Harmony Terrace on 41st Street near Greenpoint Avenue has displayed a “Grade Pending” sign since September 18th. Why is it taking so long for an inspector to visit?
Actually, yes. And it’s delicious. Really really good.
Mangal Kebab is fantastic! This breaks my heart.
The bald guy in Souk el Shater is very friendly and his food is good. I like that place as well.
I’m not a huge Mangal Kebab house fan. Souk el Shater is MUCH better, in my opinion.
I agree with Diane. They’re one of my favorite eateries n Sunnyside.
Mangal is terrific. Glad they were able to rectify the situation and reopen so quickly. Try their Lentil Soup and homemade bread sometime. One of the best lunches you can get in the neighborhood for less than $5.
Who In there right mind would go in there? I can remeber there was a Chock full o Nuts Coffee shop on that corner of 47thst.
People actually eat there??!!
