Dec. 13, 2011 Staff Report
The Woodside residents of a two-story house that was destroyed by fire in November are in need of some financial help this Christmas.
The Nov. 18 fire claimed the life of one victim, injured four others and forced the families from their 40-38 61st Street home out. Residents in neighboring properties were also required to leave. There were 25 people in total who were required to flee, including four children and babies.
With the holidays approaching, councilman Jimmy Van Bramer is calling on the community to help these families. He has partnered with the Red Cross and local Pastor Daniel Gilland for a relief drive to aid the victims.
Van Bramer’s office is now collecting food and household items, including diapers, baby food, non-perishable adult food, cleaning products, toys, new clothing, and cooking utensils, to support the families.
The drive runs through Dec. 21. Donations can be dropped off at Van Bramer’s District office at 47-01 Queens Boulevard, Suite 205, and at participating Queens libraries: Woodside, Sunnyside, Long Island City, Broadway and Court’s Square.
