The New York City marathon that took place Sunday drew several Sunnyside and Woodside residents.

Sunnysider Mary McKnight, 40, and her sister Kathy O’Sullivan Parra, 31, (also a local), ran the race and finished in times of 04:28 and 04:32 respectively.

McKnight may not have won the event, but the mother of eight enjoyed the family occasion.  “My sisters (Kathy, 31, Jeanne Martin, 41, and Theresa O’Sullivan, 35 [all from the neighborhood]) and I enjoyed training,” adding, “We were inspired by my dad, (local Mike O’Sullivan, 68,) who started running four years ago and at first could hardly get down a block.” This was his fourth marathon, she said.

Mary and sister Kathy had never ran farther than 20 miles until Sunday. She looked fine Monday, admitting to being “a little sore.”

Other local runners included Dermot McHale, Craig Geraghty and Jordan Hare.

McKnight says she got the silver blanket and the medal and was pleased that the NYTimes published everyone who finished in under five hours. “I can check this off my bucket list!”
