A man on a black mountain-bicycle has approached several local women riding up behind them and grabbing their buttocks or breasts–before fleeing.
Five women and a 12-year-old girl have been attacked by the man, believed to be a 30-40 year-old Hispanic.
Three of the attacks have been in Sunnyside and three in Woodside.

Thursday, September 22, 2011, 1900 hours, Skillman Ave. and 46 Street. Victim: F/W/38.
Tuesday, September 27, 2011, 0745 hours, 43 Avenue and 42 Street. Victim: F/W/12.
Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 0800 hours, 39-36 55 Street. Victim: F/A/29.
Thursday, October 6, 2011, 0809 hours, 38 Avenue and 56 Street. Victim: F/H/29.
Friday, October 7, 2011, 0800 hours, 39 Avenue and 46 Street. Victim: F/W/24.

This seems to be an epidemic. I wonder if these guys read about the other guys (the ones in Brooklyn) in the papers and want to copy them?
outrageous the police doesn’t do more to inform the public before he’s attacked 7 times. and again, as we all know, sunnyside gets the short end of the stick regarding 108 pct patrolling and responding.
was this mentioned at any recent community board, civic or precinct meetings?
i’ll kick him in the face 7 times, one for each woman he grabbed and another just for being a sick perverted bastard. i hope he gets locked up and abused in jail. bastard.

I got a kind of same attack front of station (40 st) few month ago. I was running to station and a guy just grabbed my butt! I looked the guy and he was saying it was mistake( yeah right what kind of mistake was that )
I was shocked and running late to work so just left there with confusing…
I have been having a pepper spray after the attack! I still regret that didn’t do anything to the guy….

Marilyn, my comment is in response to the shock I’m seeing among people–not just here–that this is happening in the first place. Even the way it was being reported on the news this morning–as if this kind of thing has never happened before!
I don’t feel safer either because I drew a conclusion about the perpertrator’s reasons..it was a wordy way of saying “Why is anyone shocked by this?”
Your comments about what we can DO to protect ourselves are well made and practical.
Unfortunately, I don’t think we can expect the kind of police patrols that took place in the past…it seems the days of the “beat cop” who walked a beat and knew the neighborhood are gone. Not that I think this is a good idea, I think it’s a shame.
Understanding the psycho/social motives of his behavior is not going to make me feel any safer or more comfortable allowing my teenage daughter outside.
There is no police presence in Sunnyside. An officer doesn’t have to be posted at every street but a drive by or someone on foot patrol is a good idea. I also think that we should follow the example of some other communities and learn how to protect ourselves with self defense classes. Sunnyside Community Center may want to faciliate such a class.
In addition, women please be aware of your surroundings. Use your common sense and get off the phone, look up when you’re walking and not at your cell phone and take out the ear buds. I am not blaming the victims but encouraging personal responsibility. As we don’t have any police presence here, we need to do what we can do so we are not easily victimized.

Let’s be realistic, you cannot have a police officer on every street at all times. If you think taxes are high now, how would we pay for such security?
I see the problem as this: why does this guy do this in the first place? The lack of civility and respect for others is rampant in today’s society, and this is a yet another reflection of that trend.
these reports are old. They date back to sept. How come we only read this news at this site. It is terrible that we need to have more of a police precence. He has hit 7 times How many more before he really hurst some order person. we need more police here. Or form a neighborhood watch.
