Civic leader Donald McCallian, 77, is home recovering after heart surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan this month.
He reports that his surgery was the placement of a stent in an artery which was 99 per cent blocked. “It is hereditary,” he says.
McCallian works as an aide to Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, and his volunteer roles read like a list of every organization in the area.
He is president of United Forties Civic Association, treasurer of the 108 Police Precinct Community Council, and a board member of Community Board 2, among positions in many other local organizations for community betterment.
In a further complication, his wife, Eileen McCallian, was coming to assist in bringing him home last Tuesday when she was clipped by an MTA bus, sustaining a leg injury. She was brought in an ambulance to the same hospital where McCallian was. Both are home in Woodside, recovering and receiving well wishers and friends.
“I am feeling pretty good,” McCallian said today, laughing ruefully, “considering I had major heart surgery and Eileen was hit by bus.”
