Giant Potholes on Roosevelt Ave. Are Gone

July 15, 2011 Staff Report

A pothole plagued section of Roosevelt Ave. was resurfaced this week after the Department of Transportation made aware that it was so badly damaged.

The stretch, located between 51st and 58th streets, had earned itself the reputation as being “pothole valley”. The DOT had already been called to that small section of Roosevelt Ave. 10 times this year, each time to repair multiple potholes. A decision was made that it had to be freshly paved.

The DOT has a schedule in which it repaves streets, but “I implored them to speed it up given its condition,” said Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer. The road was severely damaged by record snowfalls and fluctuating temperatures and simple pothole repairs were not enough, he added.

Last week a DOT crew began milling the stretch of road. On Wednesday it concluded paving it with asphalt.

DOT announced last month that it had filled more than 400,000 potholes since July 1, 2010, and in Queens alone that number was 97,300.
