Key Food’s expansion of its 46th Street supermarket is near completion.
The expansion is part of a major redevelopment of the site, which includes the building of office space and rental property on the Greenpoint Ave. portion of the site.
According to Raide Zahriyeh, the manager of Key Food, the development will include seven rental apartments and two office suites above the supermarket, which are expected to be completed by October.
On Monday, the supermarket began selling food products in a portion of the new ground-floor space. In two weeks time, Key Food is expected to fully utilize this new area. However, once the supermarket expansion is complete, Key Food will begin refurbishing its existing space and be closing off sections bit-by-bit.

I hope they put bottle redemption in this new store so that the disgusting bums who pee in the street and take a crap in the alleyways can go hang out over there.
I love the park benches Raquel! Never noticed any homeless… but I enjoy a nice ice cream cone sitting there on hot summer days 🙂
I have a suggestion for the “mall” – take away the benches. I have seen too many bums hanging out there even at night.
The will never close QB and turned into a pedestrian mall, but we can all envision Greenpoint Avenue and 46th becoming car-free on the weekends. This would be lovely and help encourage local shopping.
I agree, we should discourage private vehicle ownership- these dirty and dangerous machines are anachronistic and should no longer be a dominant part of our life in Sunnyside. We have given car owners a disproportionate amount of space already and our urban world has become clogged as a result.
queens blvd will never be shut down for a street fair. It is a main drag for traffic into major roadways and bridges.
People with cars can easily go to Stop & Shop. The Key Food on QB is intended for quick shopping when you step off the train or bus, not for a week or two weeks’ worth of groceries that require a car to haul them home…sorry but I disagree that parking should be added to this area. The last thing we need is MORE people driving around 46th Street.
There’s also a perfectly nice space occupied by an ugly Rite-Aid store at 51st and Roosevelt. That building was once an A&P. And it has parking. It’s too bad Rite-Aid is there and not a full supermarket.
Hi Sartke and Susan we still need a place to put your car when you get it here if you have a car. Not saying everyone drives but it is an option..
Would it not be great to open our town to no driving on certain streets so you can walk a shop all you want.. Like run a street fair for let say august and close done queens blvd and greenpoint. that would be great.
I agree with Sartke. More parking = more cars. Please, don’t assume everyone who lives here has a car.
This building is seconds away from the best public transit system in America. The less parking, the better.
Krissi, I thoght they had parking underground or somethings. I know that street parking is horrible. /who ever rents space is gioing in carless or will spend a fortune on gas just to find a space.
That is one of the biggest problems in our town LACK of parkiing. We need a muni parking lot instead of buiding a buiding.

The renovation of the supermarket portion is still FAR from completion. Having been there only yesterday, I would guess that it will take SEVERAL MONTHS at the very least. They’ll be lucky if it’s finished by Christmas.
I hate that Key Food. It’s so small and smells funkadellic when you walk in there. Will this one have bottle redemption machines as well, so we can smell juice and beer residue from a block away?
Are the offices and apt rented. Plus where are they going to park. Is their a parking lot in their building as well.

That building like every other new one is nothing but a soulless, concrete shoebox.

I wish somebody could beautify that mall on 46th Street. It is a mess and I notice more bums hanging around.
