March 31, 2011 Staff Report

Robert De Niro was in Sunnyside Wednesday night shooting a movie outside Alpha Donuts on Queens Blvd.

The film, called Another Night, is set in the late ’80s and Alpha Donuts was viewed as an ideal location for a diner of that period.

Alpha Donuts is a classic! It’s been there for decades. Good diner food at low prices. Not many neighbors know that with the breakfast special, before 11 AM you get a free donut to top off your meal. You can’t beat that.

I recall somebody’s relative being busted for having too much “sugar” on the donuts!

did you know, Alpha’s won Best Cruller in the city by Serious Eats?

“Best Old-Fashioned Cruller: Alpha Donuts: We’re not talking the light, eggy French cullers here, but the classics, an Old-Fashioned Cruller done justice by Alpha Donuts. This liberally iced doughnut has a dense and moist crumb, every bit offing a trace hint of cinnamon. Alpha’s cruller is about the size of a brick—best for sharing with a friend.”

Don’t be dissin’ the Alpha! Their donuts aren’t as good as they used to be, but their diner food is awesome and just the ticket.

Alpha is not my idea of a “diner,” which would be a free-standing building patterned after the dining car of a train. Many of the old-timers in Queens, now all demolished, were actually converted from train dining cars.
