The Woodside library scored big at the NYC Neighborhood Library Awards last night, winning $20,000 as one of seven outstanding branches in the city.

The fourth annual award ceremony celebrated the “most exceptional library branches” chosen from 200 branches citywide and after sifting through a record-breaking 24,000 nominations. All seven libraries were deemed to have provided outstanding services and a welcoming environment “while on a tight budget,” according to a release.

One nomination for the Woodside library at 54-22 Skillman Ave., which was written by a neighborhood resident, recalled a time when staff went above and beyond for a visitor in a wheelchair who couldn’t get to the second floor of the library to attend a Korean class because of an elevator outage. “When the staff found this out, they immediately discussed it with the Korean teacher and suggested to move the class to the ground floor so the person in a wheelchair could attend the class,” the resident said.

The Woodside library and the six other grand prize winners, along with five finalists, will be able to use the awarded funds to support the individual branches needs, be it new materials, additional events, or program expansions.

The awards are a joint effort by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Charles H. Revson Foundation, two philanthropic organizations.

The full list of grand prize winners:

Allerton Library (Allerton, Bronx)
Chatham Square Library (Chinatown, Manhattan)
Queens Library at Lefferts (Richmond Hill, Queens)
New Utrecht Library (New Utrecht, Brooklyn)
Queens Library at Woodside (Woodside, Queens)

I’m glad Woodside got some of that money. One has to wonder though how much of it will disappear as Queens Library’s “overhead” before the remainders actually benefit the public visiting?
