La Adelita Reopens on Roosevelt Avenue as Mexican Bakery, Takes Restaurant to LIC

La Adelita, the Mexican bakery and restaurant originally located in a soon-to-be demolished Woodside building, has re-emerged just one block away from its former site.

The new locale, still taking after the name given to women in the military during the Mexican Revolution, opened one week ago at 54-05 Roosevelt Ave. as a bakery and mini mart mostly offering Mexican products.

Items at the bakery include an array of colorful conchas, cemitas, donuts, and other breads and pastries, identical to the options at the former site. Hot beverages, like coffee and champurrado, are also available.

A variety of tamales are also made fresh and offered on weekends at the locale.

Products imported from Mexico, like tortillas, coffees, candies, and hot sauces, are stocked in the locale’s small grocery section and also available to purchase.

Maria Iglesias, the owner of La Adelita, said finding a space to keep both the restaurant and bakery in one, like her original location before the owner filed plans for a five-story development there last year, proved difficult.

“We thought we were going to get the deal in Sunnyside, but the negotiation was not successful,” Iglesias said. “Now, after nine months, we were able to open the bakery here.”

The restaurant will instead operate in an entirely different location under a different name, and is set to open sometime in March in Long Island City’s Hunters Point neighborhood.

The restaurant, called Corazon de Mexico, will seat nearly 80 people, and will offer a menu similar to the former Adelita’s, including Mexican staples like burritos, tacos, and fajitas, and a variety of soups, salads, meat and seafood courses. Iglesias is also applying for a full liquor license.

Entrees, paired with a drink, are expected to cost between $30 to $45, Iglesias said.

The Woodside bakery is open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Long Island City restaurant, opening at 10-09 50th Ave., will likely open from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on weekdays, and possibly until 2 a.m. on weekends.
