Defaced Veterans Monument in Woodside Cleaned by Non-Profit, Van Bramer

(Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer)

Jan. 23, 2018 By Nathaly Pesantez

A defaced Veterans memorial at a Woodside park was cleared of graffiti yesterday by a non-profit group and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer.

The Veterans Memorial at John Vincent Daniels Jr. Square, located along Roosevelt Ave. between 51st and 52nd Streets, was vandalized with orange-colored lettering over the weekend. The memorial and square honor Daniels, a Woodside resident who was killed in action in 1918 during World War I.

Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer

“The defamation of a monument to those who have served our country is a disgrace that I will not accept,” said Council Member Van Bramer. “The minute a constituent reached out to my office and alerted me to the situation, I made sure this monument was cleaned and restored as quickly as possible.”

Fedcap, a non-profit that helps people overcome barriers to employment, dispatched members of their joint-Wildcat program to help clear the graffiti off the memorial.

The entire brick square itself, officially named Vincent Daniels Square in 1933, was also cleaned up during yesterday’s efforts.

How about instead of pissing and moaning about photo ops, more of us get out and do volunteer work in the neighborhood?

I don’t see any of you bellyachers scrubbing the pigment. Unless you’re prepared to spend all day powerwashing bricks crusted with generations of pigeon shit while looking like a bearded Cindy Loo Hoo, I think you have no right to complain.

The City View Inn, which has been used by the city to provide temporary shelter for homeless families, will now be sheltering up to 100 single men, – why wasn’t Mr. JVB there taking a picture with these people having to leave this shelter with all their belongs and plastic bags – a disgrace – and everyone else says the same thing — mr. photo for his convenience to say he is doing something —

Hey the guy is doing something good. If he wants to bring it to the attention of the public with a picture, that’s fine with me. Good Job

Why didn’t you just go clean it without having to get your picture taken doing it? Why do you need the press on every single thing you do??

By definition, you wouldn’t know what he does or doesn’t do when you’re not present. Nice try

This isn’t Al. , Mr. Al moved to Warwick. Sold the house in sunnyside and walked away rich. Cleared a cool $1.2mil. I think he paid 220 for the house in the early 1990s. He made a lot of money in construction for local 3 and his private business. Good for al. Good guy, good electrician. Honest. Enjoy retirement al. We will miss you and the work you did for your neighbors at a very low cost. Thank you. Mr Al. Enjoy retirement

The defacing of the monument is a travesty but Wow Nice Photo-Op Jimmy Van Bramer!! Now what about crying foul every time your office not notified about a new homeless shelter popping up in our neighborhood. You and your office need to be on the ball here apparently you don’t care about the fringes of LIC and your real constituents are getting fed up with your lack knowledge of what issues are affecting our community, mainly the cropping up of Homeless Shelters in our neighborhood.

You’re divided over the cleaning of vandalism from veterans monuments? That’s too bad Brian Johnson. I, for one, think our veterans deserve recognition.

If you want to live in a world that tolerates vandalism on monuments to veterans, then cast your vote accordingly. Maybe you did, and thats why we have a 5x draft-dodger as president.

I think you should respect the folks that serve in the military. Not sure why you are upset that the vandalism is cleaned off.

You have the right not to, but it’s in poor taste.

God bless
