Dayboat, the seafood restaurant on Queens Boulevard, has closed

Dayboat on 41-16 Queens Boulevard

Aug. 17, 2017 By Nathaly Pesantez

Dayboat, the seafood restaurant on Queens Boulevard specializing in ceviche, has closed.

Three neighboring businesses confirmed that the restaurant at 41-16 Queens Boulevard has been closed for a couple of weeks, with one business owner saying that Robert Mendoza, the owner of Dayboat, last spoke to them about a month ago about negotiating the sale of the restaurant.

The restaurant’s page on Google Reviews also bears the “permanently closed” designation.

Calls to the restaurant’s two telephone numbers do not go through, and the owner of the property could not be reached for comment.

A Craigslist ad posted in late June indicated that the restaurant was “priced for a quick sale” by the owner, who also included that all restaurant equipment would stay in place in the sale.

Dayboat opened in December 2016 and served a variety of seafood dishes that combined preparation techniques from a mix of cultures and countries. The restaurant was best known for its ceviche—raw fish cut and marinated with citrus, fish dashi, onions, and celery.

Dayboat used to be the site of the acclaimed Salt & Fat, which closed in October 2016.

And dont tell me butcher block because they suck. Anyone who heats corned beef or pastrami in a microwave oven is not an option. The wings suck too. Never again

You can’t even get a loaf of Rye bread, and you will never find a “Liverwurst Sandwich” in Sunnyside anymore. Back when “Baumann’s Rosebush Tavern” was on the corner of Skillman Ave and 40th Street, they always had a “Free Lunch” table with liverwurst, balogna, spiced ham, Swiss cheese, rye, pumpernickel and white bread. You could get a 7 ounce Rhinegold beer and a free sandwich for $.15 cents…..ah, the good old days:-)

Yeah all this money to live here. Houses 800-900,000 , tiny co-op for 325-400,000 , rents 2000 & up , to live with drugs and crime. Time to go.

He’s right, there nothing but crime and drugs here. Especially these sickos grabbing women. The quality of this neighborhood has gone down and the price has gone up.

Dayboat has been closed for weeks now. A new business taking over the space may depend on current renovations to the large meeting hall just to the east of the restaurant. That hall seems to be only place in Sunnyside that can be rented for public events by ethnic and/or religious groups.

Oh I loved Dayboat. Going in there was always a wonderful experience. The staff was friendly, the food was great. It was a wonderful experience. Another piece of old Sunnyside is lost. Boo, hoo. Hoo, boo. Not!

A piece of sunnyside. What were they in business for, like 6 months? I guess the neighborhood is doomed. They Should get landmark status.

You humorless imbeciles can’t you see that I was just kidding. I was making fun of the idiots who’ve cried over the other stupid restaurants that have gone out of business. You people are truly morons. I laugh at all of you every day.

Good they sucked. Sunnyside pizza should take the space. The pizza is so good, now if we have a place to sit down and enjoy it that would be real nice. It beats the “tent” he has now. Also I would love to see how sunnyside pizza would do with hero’s, hot dishes.

Roses is pretty much the standard to compare to in the area. They are outstanding.

But it’s in maspeth, and they have a full service restaurant. Now time for sunnyside pizza to do the same if that’s indeed what they want to do. This was just a suggestion. If the guy is happy, he should leave well enough alone

I’ve been hearing this crap about Rosa’s since the 80s, it wasn’t nearly as good as Sal’s then and it’s not better than Sunnyside now.

The pizza in Sunnyside and Maspeth, is barely worth eating. If you want a really good “Slice” or a pie, you have to go to Astoria. S & S Calabro Pizzeria is the best in Queens. Since ’71 they have made the best. Same owner, right from Italy, I just wish he had “Deep Fried Calzone”, then it would be perfect:-) He’s at 30-65 14th Street, if you really want a great “Slice”:-)

Rosas pizza??? Really? That ? sucks… How’s pizza on grand ave is a billion times better..heck, pizza boy destroys rosas.

Funny all the people who trash Rosa’s, yet it’s known all over as the best pizza in the area. And they don’t have to deliver since they make so much business from people just coming there. Keep hating, folks. Leaves more delicious pizza for the rest of us 🙂

Except for Sidetracks, Dog and Duck, Dasies, Quaint, Mario’s, Pete’s Grill, Piko Riko, The Turkish Grill, Bar43, Danatos, oh and White Castle.

I guess not much news happening. There has been one story for about a week about a restaurant that has been closed for a few months. We need a new owner for this blog.

Of all of the above eateries, the White Castle probably takes the longevity title by eons. I can personally vouch for it being up and running as early as 1947 when I was a seventh grader at 125. Nevertheless, although Sunnyside (including the Castle) has changed over the decades, it is probably the only Sunnyside business that existed when I lived there (43-07 42nd St). .

While I moved away from Sunnyside in 1955, I will always consider it to be my home town. Been living in the Washington, DC area ever since I got out of the Air Force in 1960. I love to look at the pictures that appear in the Post and try to visualize how the sites looked when I lived there. Hell, the store front occupied by the the Dayboat was a hobby shop back then.

Stop trying different things for Sunnyside, just open a nail salon or barber already because our town needs another one.

Salt & Fat did fine in this location. Dayboat was uninspired and poorly executed. Ceviche is not new or different in this area. Their version came with pretension and higher prices. No loss.

Is that why they closed after a few years. They might of had a small run but that’s far from they did fine in this location. Tells me they had a mediocre short run.

I think you miss read the previous comment it states that Salt & Fat did fine not Day Boat. Salt & Fat did do very well and the owner sold the business to move out west.

How about a decent BAKERY? One that has good Rye Bread and Pumpernickle and real Hard Rolls!
Sunnyside hasn’t had a decent Bakery in decades.
