Owner of Mario’s Italian Restaurant to appear on ‘Sweet Genius’

Lynn Chauca and daughter Angela Cuervo

The owner of Mario’s Restaurant, an Italian eatery located at 43-04 47th Ave., will be appearing on Sweet Genius, the dessert-based competition that pits four of America’s leading pastry chefs against one another through three rounds of challenges critiqued and judged by Ron Ben-Israel, executive chef and owner of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes in New York City.

Lynn Chauca and her daughter Angela Cuervo will take part in the show on May 3rd at 10pm on the Food Network. The mother-daughter duo will compete by using their creativity, ingenuity and imagination to create chocolate, candy or cake desserts employing surprise ingredients and a specific inspiration under timed conditions in the hopes of advancing to the final round for chance at a $10,000 cash prize. The show, which is hosted by Ron Ben-Israel, is back for a second season.

Chauca’s strength is in baking chocolate mousse, cheese cakes, brownies, and Napoleons—which she has been doing at Mario’s for the past 26-years. Meanwhile, Cuervo is a specialist in baking custom cakes—for weddings and other special occasions.

The women were selected for the show after Cuervo applied online to compete. She was called in to meet with producers from the show and a video clip was created. They called her back for a follow-up interview – this time over the phone—which subsequently resulted in her being selected for the show.

Cuervo, who lives in Sunnyside, told the producers about her mother and she too went through the same interview process. Chauca is from Woodside.

The show has already been taped. However, “we have been sworn to secrecy,” said Cuervo. She hopes that local residents will watch the show and root for them.

Special thanks to Luke Adams, from the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, whose blog brought this story to our attention.

Politicans alert Sunnysiders about recent sex attack

Neighborhood politicians held a press conference this morning at 46th Street and Queens Blvd. to warn residents about a sexual predator on the loose who attacked a Sunnyside woman on Easter Sunday.

The press conference came just two days after a 30-year-old woman was attacked near 39-08 46th Street at 5:45 am. The man threw the woman into the bushes and put his hands down her blouse and punched her in the face.

Fortunately, Mike Novak, a neighborhood resident, heard the women’s screams from his house and ran outside to check it out—causing the perpetrator to flee. The incident occurred on the same block as where Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer lives.

The attacker is believed to be a male Hispanic in his late 20s-early 30s, and to be between 5 ‘6’ to 5 ‘8’.

This latest attack comes on the heels of six groping episodes that took place in Sunnyside and Woodside in September and October last year. None of those incidents, which involved female victims as young as 12, were solved. The perpetrator of those attacks was believed to a Hispanic man who rode around the area on a black mountain bike.

This latest victim, similar to those last year, was unable to provide police with a good description—given the speed and surprise associated of the attack.

At the press conference, Congressman Joseph Crowley, Van Bramer and other elected officials personally distributed fliers with Mike Novak to subway riders as they were on their way to work. The fliers provided a description of the perpetrator and were used to raise public awareness about the recent attack.

The police do not believe this latest incident is linked to last year’s episodes—although they are still early in their investigation. Furthermore, there does not appear to be a link to the groping incidents in Jackson Heights, where four women have been sexually attacked in the past month.

“The recent uptick in sex-related attacks in our neighbourhood is intolerable,” said State Sen. Mike Gianaris. “Women in our community should feel comfortable riding the subway, walking the streets and going about their daily activities.”

Meanwhile, Van Bramer insisted that Sunnyside is a safe neighborhood. “This [attack] is not indicative of Sunnyside or Sunnyside Gardens.” Instead, he added, “Mike Novak’s heroism is indicative of our neighborhood.”

Christine Quinn, council speaker, said it was “unfortunate that we are at this corner once again responding to individuals thinking they can prey on women.”

Quinn said that there have also been a number of groping incidents in Manhattan. “There is a man who has been groping women in 3 neighborhoods.”

Meanwhile, when Novak was asked about his bravery, he just shrugged his shoulders and said: “I’m no hero. I just did what anyone would do if they heard a woman screaming.”

Elected officials to hold press conference following Sunnyside attack

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Mike Novak, the local resident who came to the aid of a woman being sexually assaulted yesterday morning, will speak out against the sex attack which took place in Sunnyside on Easter Sunday.

Details on the attack, first reported by the Sunnyside Post, are in the story below.

Van Bramer is holding the press conference as well as leafleting the area to raise awareness about the incident and help police identify the perpetrator responsible for the crime.

The press conference will take place at 7:00 am Tuesday, April 10th.

Location: 46 Street and Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside

Sunnyside woman attacked by groper in the Gardens

A 30-year-old Sunnyside female was sexually attacked on 46th Street this morning (Sunday).

The perpetrator attacked the woman in the vicinity of 39-08 46th Street and “put his hands down her blouse and punched her in the face,” according to police. The incident occurred at 5:45 am. The woman had been visiting relatives and had just caught the subway home.

Mike Novak, a 46th street resident, heard from his house the woman yelling for help.

“I ran out of my house and he had her in the bushes,” Novak said. “I chased after him, but he had sneakers while I was barefoot so he got away.”

Novak, whose wife is a nurse, brought the victim back to his house. His wife made sure she was ok before the police and EMS arrived.

Novak described the man as a Hispanic in his late 20s.

The New York Post did a follow up on the story this morning (Monday).

Sunnyside double garage for sale: $130,000

Barnett Ave., just off 44th Street

Sunnyside residents have always found parking tough.

However, is it tough enough to pay $130,000 for a double garage on Barnett Ave?

“I know it sounds like an outrageous price for a garage,” said Rita Lowry of Welcome Home Real Estate, whose firm is listing the property. “But that is the market right now and those are the offers coming in. Parking is hard to find quickly around here.”

Lowry said that a single garage sold for $68,000 a few years back–to many people’s surprise. “They don’t come on the market very often and that is why I believe they are so desirable and sellers are able to get such high offers.”

Going rates for a rental of a single car garage in the area, according to several agents, runs from $175 to $250 per month.

In celebration of Easter, Christians from Queen of Angels Roman Catholic Church were joined by parishioners from All Saints Church, Sunnyside Reformed Church and Grace Fellowship yesterday in the reenactment of the Good Friday Crucifixion.

Ciaran & Orlaith Staunton’s son Celebrated

By Pat Dorfman

More than 1,000 mourners crowded into Woodside’s St. Mary’s Winfield Church Thursday morning, with hundreds more outside, to show respect to the Staunton–O’Dowd family, who suffered the loss of young Rory Staunton.

Rory fell ill last week after a light scrape while playing basketball. Four days later, a freakish infection took over his body and the 12-year passed away, leaving his family, friends, and the rest of the community in shock.

The two-hour service included scores of tributes. Rory’s 7th grade teacher from Garden School, where Rory was in 7th grade, broke down during his remarks. He praised Rory’s “big heart,” and debating skills, and said that Rory was “the most precocious 12-year old” he had ever taught. He mentioned Rory’s “insatiable passion for life,” and his willingness to stand alone to defend those picked on or in trouble.

A violinist, guitarist and soprano performed throughout. The service included moving mainstream songs, such as “You Raise Me Up,” which accompanied the two giant video screens on each side of the altar, displaying scenes of Rory’s life. Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” captured the sentiment of many speakers who spoke of hoping to see Rory again someday. The service was broadcast in its entirety to family and friends in England, Ireland and Australia.

Many came to the service from Ireland to pay their respects. Additionally, there were several elected officials in attendance, including: Congressman Joseph Crowley; Assemblywomen Cathy Nolan and Marge Markey, Council speaker Christine Quinn; and Councilmen Jimmy Van Bramer and Danny Dromm.

A group of Sunnyside mothers were asked to eulogize Rory, which they did, often using the tributes of his friends, their own children. One mother noted that she saw Rory’s kindness when he bought her and her child red and green candies at the store with his own money, showing support for his favorite Irish football team, Kerry, but none for himself. Kerry was the home county of his mother Orlaith O’Dowd’s family, with his father, Ciaran, usually rooting for Mayo. Another Sunnyside mother said that Rory was the “sweetest and noble person I have ever met, and had “no malice.”

Many speakers mentioned Rory’s protectiveness and friendship with his younger sister Kathleen and their maternal cousin, Alana; his meeting with President Obama and the first lady; his wish to attend Georgetown University and go into politics; and his desire to become a professional pilot. Rory was said to have idolized John F. Kennedy and Rosa Parks.

Niall O’Dowd, Rory’s uncle and the publisher of the Irish Voice, was visibly shaken by the loss of his nephew, the “son I never had.” He said he had just received a call from the Irish Prime Minister about Rory and that the PM would be attending the upcoming service in Ireland this Sunday. O’Dowd spoke eloquently, concluding, “Some day with a blue sky above and a fair wind behind, and our hearts full, our dreams will come true and we will meet our beautiful boy again.”

Surprising all was the lengthy tribute paid by Rory’s father, Ciaran Staunton, owner of Molly Bloom’s pub in Sunnyside and co-founder of The Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (a group seeking green cards for undocumented Irish). Although emotional at times, Staunton praised his son without hyperbole and at the end of his remarks got a close to one-minute standing ovation.

Staunton mentioned Noah Zimmerman, Rory’s close friend, and the inseparable group of 40-to-50 children, a “mini ratpack,“ in Sunnyside Gardens. Staunton spoke of his son’s strong interest in political and his knowledge of world events.

He told one story, to rousing laughter, of the evening when the family television was tuned to “Housewives of New York City,” and Rory burst downstairs to break the news to them that the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il had passed away.

Staunton spoke about the flying lessons Rory insisted on and his wish to become a pilot. After being refused lessons due to his age, Rory went on the internet found a school on Long Island who would allow him to study and fly with his instructor on his twelfth birthday, and they finally agreed. He landed the plane himself.

Rory’s father spoke of the “scheming and plotting” of Rory and Kathleen and how their parental wishes “meant nothing.” He said after attending a bar mitzvah, Rory was very disappointed that he was not going to have one.

Family friend Deidre Feerick, outside helping the NYPD “Clergy Unit” handle the traffic jam caused by the number of attendees, said she was impressed with Rory. “He didn’t just play in Sunnyside Gardens Park. A year ago or so, he drew up a plan to recycle rain water for the park, with proper documents and engineering thought out.”

Everyone who attended, and the event was open to all, were invited to a sit-down lunch in St. Mary’s Gym next door. Over 800 stayed for sandwiches, fruit salad, cookies, salad, coffee, and soda.

Father Tom, the priest who gave the eulogy, mentioned, “People of all faiths and with no faith are here to show they care,” and praised the family’s remarkable “complete lack of dispute” in the last days.

An immense cluster of white orange and green balloons referencing Ireland were released as the coffin was returned to the hearse. Lynch Funeral Home in Sunnyside is handling the return of Rory Staunton to Ireland, where he will be buried, in the “arms of his grandmother.”

The community knows that the grief will never fully pass away for the close-knit family and friends. But most of the community seem blindsided by the sudden passing of someone part of the daily fabric of their lives, a kind, smart, cheerful boy. They came to pay respects but found solace for themselves. “It brought me to tears,” said Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce staffer Luke Adams, “It was a beautiful service.”

Thomas Noonan playground plans are unveiled

Preliminary plans for the revamp of the Thomas P. Noonan Playground have been released by the New York City Parks Dept. and will include an upgrade to the rainbow sprinkler system, a new play area, safety features and new shrubbery.

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who called for the upgrade last year, initially set aside $600,000 to spruce up the rainbow sprinkler and its surroundings—but the revamp grew into a $1.4 million project in response to public feedback.

Last year, Van Bramer called on the public to put forward ideas as to how the playground should be improved. He placed suggestion boxes in the public library and in his council office. “We received 200 responses, tabulated them and discussed them with the [New York City] Parks Department.”

The Parks Department’s plan will increase the size of the playground, providing room for two sets of play areas instead of the one that is there now. There will be one play area that targets 2-to-5 year olds, while the other will be for 5-to-12 year olds. Both play areas will include swings—with the older play area including a small rock climbing area.

To make way for the older-children’s play area, some of the adult benches that are near the chess & checkers area will be removed. There will be greenery, such as shrubs, separating the playground area from the adult/chess area.

The rainbow sprinkler system will be moved closer to the playground entrance at the corner of Greenpoint Ave. and 43rd Street. It is clearly marked on the map.

The plan calls for the rainbow sprinkler to be revamped with the latest fixtures.  “It will be multi-dimensional, where children can be sprayed from many directions,” Van Bramer said. Furthermore, “there will be six holes in the ground where water sprays upward.”

Moreover, the entire playground area will be fenced in—with one entrance in and out of the area at the corner of 43rd and Greenpoint Ave. That existing entrance will be narrowed to cut the risk that kids will dart out onto the street.

Presently, children are able to run out of the park at the 42nd street end exit (on Greenpoint Ave. or 47th Ave)—as well as the main entrance.

A flagpole will be erected in honor of Thomas Noonan, with his name etched in to the granite at the bottom. “When I visited PS199 recently, many children told me they wanted to know more about who he was, so we decided it was important to put up a memorial,” Van Bramer said.

Van Bramer said he is calling on the Parks Dept. to get a plaque placed on the park house wall that provides further information on Noonan, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor after being killed in the Vietnam War.

Van Bramer expects construction to begin in the spring of 2013 and anticipates that it will be completed within a year.

Shrubbery will also be planted behind the park house, with new trees toward 47th Ave.

Pulse Fitness customers taken for a ride

Pulse Fitness in Sunnyside Queens

Darlene Campbell went to Pulse Fitness, located at 38-04 48th Street, this morning for her regular yoga session.

Campbell, who had signed up for a 2-year membership in Oct., arrived to a crowded scene of regulars who were transfixed to the sign on the locked front door: “Due to Landlord tenant issues and a bad economy…it was with deep regret…that Pulse Fitness will close its doors as of April 2.

“It was completely locked and even our yoga instructor turned up not knowing what was going on,” Campbell said. A group of about 10 attendees began forming a petition to see if there was any sort of remedy to get their money back.

The gym was open over the weekend. In fact, one Sunnyside Gardens resident said she had bought a one-year membership on Sunday. “I just filed a dispute with my bank for the charge made yesterday,” the woman said.

Meanwhile, late Monday several angry members gathered outside looking to get inside the gym. They too began signing petitions to see if they could have their funds returned and stated that they wanted to take their issue to the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs and/or the TV show “Shame on You.”
