Dear Sunnyside neighbors,
Every Wednesday night from 8 to 9:30, I host a gathering over beer at Molly Blooms to discuss the beliefs and claims of historical Christianity. It’s always a lively conversation–especially after the second round!
Starting this Wednesday, we will be reading through and discussing Christopher Hitchens’ book, GOD IS NOT GREAT, and interacting with an historical Christian perspective as well as other perspectives that might be offered.
I am thankful for the push-back towards me that I have seen on this site and enjoy face to face dialog. As a church, GFC, we recognize that there are many people in our neighborhood who are adamantly opposed to religion of any kind, but our hope is that we might be perceived as a servant to Sunnyside and not as an adversary. Christianity actually gives us as believers the framework and mandate to pursue amity with our society rather than impugning our neighbors.
My goal for this discussion is NOT to try to get you to convert! I can’t change your mind anyway. Rather, it is to take advantage of the diverse context we have in our neighborhood so that all of us with our varying beliefs and unbeliefs can understand each other better in order to be good neighbors with each other. In my humble opinion, I believe that in many ways our society has forgotten the true definition of ‘tolerance,’ that people can hold varying and even contradictory beliefs and yet still be amicable human beings with each other.
If you would be interested in this conversation, just show up starting this Wednesday.
Hope to see you there!
