While the crime rate dropped significantly in the Sunnyside/Woodside and LIC districts in the past month, a number of loose ends remain untied – such as bringing charges against a man who allegedly murdered a Woodside man and finding a groper of local women.

The number of crimes that were reported in the precinct was down 20% for the month of November, compared to the same month in 2010, according to Capt. Terry O’Toole, who spoke at Tuesday night’s police precinct 108 meeting. There was a significant drop off in the number of robberies, from 15 to 9, and burglaries, from 25 to 20.

The 20% decline is based on the number of criminal reports filed that fall under seven major crime categories: murder; rape; robbery; felony assault; burglary; grand larceny and grand larceny auto.

By this measure, crime is down 3% so far this year – which includes 2 murders, the same number as last year. The number of reported rapes has almost halved– from 15 for the first 11 months in 2010, to eight so far in 2011.

However, despite the positive news, the police have yet to get to the bottom of some outstanding crimes.

They have not yet arrested the man who murdered 62-year-old Wayne Graves in his bath tub at Berkeley Co-op Towers, at 52-40 39th Dr. on Oct. 19. The man was struck in the head with a blunt object by someone he knew.

Capt. O’Toole said “a man has been arrested in Boston on a different warrant,” who is believed to be the perpetrator of the crime. He would not elaborate further.

Additionally, a man who has groped many Sunnyside and Woodside women while riding his bicycle through the neighborhood has yet to be apprehended. The perpetrator has attacked six females—including a 12 year old – in between Sept. 15 and Oct. 7. Police did say that there have not been any further incidents.

Capt. O’Toole said there are a number of theories as to whether the groper is one individual or a group of individuals—since there are so many incidents across the city. “It’s very random. They ride their bikes, see someone who is attractive, grab them and take off,” O’Toole said.

Meanwhile, on 40th Street (near 47th Ave) a burglar made off with more than $2,000 in jewelry at around 11 pm, Nov. 16. There have been 10 burglaries on this block so far this year, with most at 47-25 40th Street. O’Toole didn’t have a definitive answer as to why this block had been such a target, other than saying: “It can be just one guy who lives there—and one guy can do a lot of damage.”

Local politicians dropped by the meeting to award Capt. Mark Wachter with citations for his work as a lieutenant at the 108 police precinct. Wachter will be joining the 112th precinct, which covers the neighborhoods of Elmhurst and Corona.

“Lt. Wachter was very responsive to my office; he was the point person on graffiti, and was the force behind the closing of Casa Romana (39-20 Queens Blvd), where there were some serious issues,” said councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who handed Wachter a city council citation.

Meanwhile, representatives for assemblywoman Cathy Nolan and congresswoman Carolyn Maloney handed out their own citations.

A burglar made off with more than $2,000 worth of jewelry from a Sunnyside home, authorities said.

Cops theorized that he hoisted himself onto a fire escape and snuck in through the window of an apartment on 40th Street near 47th Avenue at about 11 p.m. Tuesday while the 36-year-old tenant was out, cops said.

The loot included $2,000 in gold bracelets and a $300 diamond cross, the cops said.

###

An iCrook swiped two smartphones — from a 4-year-old boy in Sunnyside, cops said.

The kid was walking with his mom on 44th Street toward 43rd Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. Monday when the thug grabbed an AT&T bag, which had two iPhones inside, from the child’s arm, authorities said.

Police canvassed the neighborhood but weren’t able to capture the phone snatcher, who had run toward 39th Avenue.

The boy’s right arm was inflamed and swollen from the attack, cops said.

Police have yet to apprehend the so-called Sunnyside/Woodside groper, citing a lack of video evidence, photos and the difficulty that the victims have had in identifying the perpetrator.

In recent months, a man on a black mountain-bicycle has approached several local women riding up behind them and grabbing their buttocks or breasts–before fleeing.

However, the incidents have each occurred so quickly that the women have had trouble in properly identifying the man. Furthermore, the only video released of the suspect is not clear.

Five women and a 12-year-old girl have been attacked by the perpetrator, believed to be a 30-40 year-old Hispanic.

Three of the attacks have been in Sunnyside and three in Woodside.

Delilah Cordova, 21, was shot in an apartment on 64th Street, near 51st Avenue, and rushed to Elmhurst Hospital. The police have arrested Elijah Stamateris, 22, who lives in that apartment. He was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment. His first court appearance is on Nov. 15.

####

(From Forum News):

Delilah Cordoba, 21, was sitting on a living room couch with Stamateris and two other friends at his basement apartment at 50-43 64th Street between 8:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to the Queens District Attorney’s office.

Various media outlets reported that the group was allegedly smoking marijuana as Stamateris was handling a 9-mm handgun when the gun suddenly discharged, firing a round into Cordoba’s head. Neither the 108th Precinct—which responded to and investigated the incident— nor the Queens District Attorney’s office would confirm on Wednesday whether marijuana was involved in the shooting or who the gun belonged to.

One witness, who asked not to be identified, told The Forum that he was out walking his dog when the incident occurred and he saw people fleeing from the apartment.

The Daily News reported that one witness overheard one of the men calling an unknown person on his cell phone and saying, “I f—d up. I think I’m going to jail,” shortly before police arrived on the scene at approximately 9:25 p.m.

Cordoba was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where she is listed in critical condition as of Wednesday.

The owner of the apartment, who declined to give his name, told The Forum on Wednesday that Stamateris had moved into the apartment on October 10—just 14 days before the shooting. When asked about whether the basement apartment where Stamateris lives in was legal, the owner hung up.
