The local crime rate has increased nearly 5 percent this year, according to statistics released today by the 108 police precinct.
Police precinct 108, which covers the neighborhoods of Woodside, Sunnyside and LIC, announced that the number of “reported” crimes increased 4.74 percent for the year-to-date period ending August 15, compared to the same period in 2009. [...]

Late July, a Sunnyside Gardens resident came home in the middle of the afternoon to find her front door pried open and her family’s belongings scattered all over the floor. Her home, located in the 49th and Skillman area, had been ransacked and $12,000 worth of jewellery, electronics and cash was stolen.

Deputy Inspector Thomas Kavanagh, the outgoing head of the 108th police precinct, reported at Tuesday night’s precinct meeting that crime dropped 9.6 percent in the past 28 days, compared to the same 28-day period one year ago.
