Sunnyside United Dog Society (SUDS)

A group devoted to the well being of dogs in the Sunnyside area.

The group is based on the northern side of Queens Blvd and is advocating for a dog run at Torsney Park (Skillman Ave. btwn 41st and 43rd Sts). Many of its members– with their dogs– can be found at that park between 8:30 pm and 9:30pm each night.

According to the group:

“One of the great things about organizations like ours is that we look after one another. We watch one another’s dogs when we go on vacation and don’t want to leave them cooped up in a kennel. We also help each other when we are sick, need someone to listen to us in good times and bad. We ARE a family….that just happens to have a huge pack-o-dogs in tow!”

Sunnyside United Neighborhood Network (SUNN)

SUNN is a non-profit group that aims to beautify the neighborhood through graffiti removal.

It organizes spring and fall events where about one hundred residents go out and clean up the graffiti in the neighborhood. Residents also are given the paint and equipment to clean graffiti all-year round.

The Group’s Goals:

To sponsor neighborhood cleanups throughout the year bringing together local volunteers to remove graffiti whenever it appears in our community.

To manage maintenance teams to remove graffiti on an on-going basis. This is what makes the biggest impact, and where it needs the most help from volunteers.

In a partnership with the Postal Service, it helps residents to “adopt” mailboxes and supply them with special paint to keep them graffiti-free.

For property owners, it offers low-cost power washing services throughout the year.

Sunnyside Chamber

The Sunnyside Chamber’s core purpose is to promote the businesses of Sunnyside individually and collectively and to foster a business-friendly climate. A positive business climate includes betterment of the greater Sunnyside community. The Sunnyside Chamber does this through unity, leadership, promotion, advocacy, referral, communication, education, and collaboration.

Members typically meet at Dazie’s Restaurant for a 12:30 lunch on the second Tuesday of every month. A guest speaker is usually invited.

Sunnyside Shines has as its mission to invigorate and enrich the economic life of the neighborhood by creating a safe, welcoming and dynamic commercial district in Sunnyside, Queens.

Sunnyside Shines covers all properties fronting Queens Boulevard from 38th St. to 49th St., Greenpoint Avenue from 43rd St. to 48th St., and South Roosevelt Avenue from 48th St. to 49th St.

Community Board 2

Community Board 2 represents the areas of Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City and a portion of West Maspeth. The district is bounded on the north by Queens Plaza North, the northern property line of the Sunnyside Rail Yard and Northern Boulevard; on the east by the Con Rail property; on the south by Calamus, Maurice and Maspeth Avenues and Newtown Creek; the East River to the west.

Community Board 2 is a diverse zoning district consisting of one, two family homes as well as a large number of multiple dwellings including Queens West, a vary rapidly expanding residential district; commercial, manufacturing and industrial areas; mass transit systems and is accessible by a number of arterial highways, bridges, and the Queens Midtown Tunnel.

Board 2 is home to Citi Court Square 1 and Court Square 2, UN Credit Bank, Silvercup Studios, DeVry Institute, LaGuardia Community College, LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Museum, Thalia Spanish Theatre; and the Borden Avenue Veterans Residence. The Long Island City Business Improvement District and the Sunnyside Business Improvement District are working to improve and enhance the commercial districts in CB 2.

Board meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month September through June.
