Traffic rules just don’t apply

Blissville

The following video shot by a resident displays some of the reckless driving on 39th Street, a one-way street off of 51st Avenue, which is the Long Island Expressway service road.

  1. Our residents should not have to do the job of the City!! This goes on DAILY, HOURLY here in Sunnyside!! Just yesterday, a driver (silver sedan) in front of my building on 43rd Av. drove in reverse, about 60 mph, through an intersection in order to get a parking space a block back!!! INSANE!! I was about to cross the street when I saw what he was doing. It’s the WILD, WILD WEST of Driving!! We need cameras!!! Sad, but true!!

  2. We absolutely, absolutely need speed cameras. The amount of criminal driving that goes on in this neighborhood is insane.

  3. No, we don’t need cameras…they do not solve anything. Also, what is wrong with Sunnyside residents being vigilant? We’re not doing the job of the City, we’re simply looking out for our neighborhood and its residents. The City is not omnipresent. I commend this resident from 39 street b/c drivers have been doing that for way too long. Granted, some drivers in the neighborhood are dammed idiots and should not be behind the wheel and luckily nothing happened to you (Pre-school Teacher)…as long as we, the residents of Sunnyside, keep bringing these issues up to Van Bramer’s office we have a voice… remember, his job depends on our votes.

  4. Statistically, most of these bad drivers are Latino

  5. Statistically, you are an ass.

  6. Ruben, what statistics are you referring to?

  7. How about the gas station by the LIE with all the deivers cutting thru sometimes at 40 mph!! i contacted 311 as a start. I am hopeful others here agree and will also call. It is EXTREMELY dangerous to drivers and pedestrians. Plus, it would make a ton of revenue for the city!

  8. Lol thats funny i did that like twice because traffic was so bad, its the dots fault there are only one way blocks heading toward the expressway, that road should at least be a two way road.

  9. I’m sure Ruben was joking–were he serious, he would have blamed ‘hipsters’ or ‘yuppies’ or some other such nonsense.

The intersection of 43rd Street and 50th Ave, not far from where this happened, must be one of the most commonly run red lights around. Most often the culprits are livery cabs racing to get onto the highway.

It seems like a camera or a well-hidden cop at that intersection could raise a bundle in fines, and make the area a great deal safer.

  10. Railroad crossing-type gates and wrong way spikes. Extreme? Yes. Effective? You betcha.

  11. I have seen this happen. But why does it seem like the video is edited. The man walking in the red sweater walks backwards. It looks like someone edited this video to show what goes on.

  12. For sometime now, an Asian motorcyclist has been racing around Sunnyside at dangerous speeds and making an infernal noise. The other day, I saw him being chased by a police car, but they failed to catch up with him. I guess a few pedestrians need to be killed or maimed before the guy is stopped.

  13. To Sunnyside Resident: Yes, it is commendable that neighbors are watching out for our safety, but we shouldn’t have to do that! The cameras catch drivers breaking the law and they receive tickets, and more importantly, POINTS ON THEIR LICENSE!! Driving is a privilege, not a right! People need to learn this!! There are so many arrogant drivers who think that “defensive driving” means ‘lean on the horn and get the hell out of my way!’ It’s got to stop before more people die!!

  14. Looking forward to what all the people moaning about bikes have to say about this. Cars and trucks are a much bigger menace here.

  15. There is such an incredible easy solution…..change the direction of 38th street that short street and a right turn only on Greenpoint….

Just make the last parking space on either side of hunters point a no parking zone for the truck to make a wide turn…..no problem on greenpoint since making a right is a no parking zone in front of massis auto.

  16. Can we do something about those speeding wreckers/tow trucks? THEY are out of control. I was hit by one last year, going the wrong way, thru a red light.
