Comment section to be upgraded
The comment section is going to be upgraded. The goal is:
1) To ensure anonymous comments will be allowed to continue.
2) Provide people who want to use their real name with the opportunity to do so through Facebook or an alternative. This is a way to ensure that the person who leaves a name is that person.

Oy! What goes on here?
This system
Way to go keep the changes going… this site is always looking very professional and great ads… keep the great progess going.. your fan…
No more anonymous comments.
The goal is the following:
1) To ensure anonymous comments will be allowed to continue.
2) Provide people who want to use their real name with the opportunity to do so through Facebook or an alternative. This is a way to ensure that the person who leaves a name is that person.
Hey oppressed Masses…you want my address and social security to go along with my profile as well? would that make you feel better??? Damn internet Nazi. Anonymous or profile it shouldn’t matter.
Given Oppressed Masses concerns, all of us on SunnysidePost would like his real name and links to his Facebook profile.
Put up or shut up, idiot.
Can there also be a Sunnyside event email-alert?! Inform everyone of events so we don’t have to read them in the SuSiPo the day after; we can actually go and experience them??
@Craic: There’s a calendar section. However, that is something owners/organizers have to fill in. I’ve also been frustrated to find out an event happened in the area that I would have been interested in, but my guess is that a lot of people do publicity backwards (i.e. gee, I have these great photos from this event last night, maybe I should submit them to a local blog to get coverage…after the fact.)
Also, I see why someone would want to get rid of anonymous comments. Anonymous commenters can often be the lowest form of life on the internet. But, considering this is a pretty local blog, I’d be uncomfortable with broadcasting exactly what neighborhood I live in. This isn’t exactly the HuffingtonPost.
I think it would’ve been better to *not* allow anonymous comments. Oh well.
@ Ruben and Bliss St: I wasn’t advocating ending anonymous posts, I was predicting that anonymous posts would be ended (which has been the trend in newspaper comment sections like the Daily News). In any event, the Editor has refuted my prediction.
It is best to ALLOW anonymity, even if we prefer people to identify themselves. As free, self-sufficient adults, all of us can judge the writings of “anonymous” persons versus those who have the courage of their convictions–in public.
Caveat Emptor. Or not….
as a frequent reader of many news sites and some blogs i think it is a good idea to allow anonymous comments. i do not have any logins for twitter, Facebook, google, disquis or any other social media mining operation.
News on this site takes forever…
how about some news now
I resent your implication that being anonymous means I don’t have the courage of my convictions! I most certainly do. But when I used my name for a while on this blog someone else appropriated it and posted stupidities in my name. The blog owner responded immediately by blocking any comment in my name that did not have an email address, thank you, but I get enough pot shots in person without getting them on websites too.
Courage of convictions….pure ulcerified bareheaded piffle.
The internet is a double edge sword. It affords anonymity to a degree but it also affords an incredible power to any psycho-nut-job and stalker out there to google your real name, find out where you and your family live and work, make your life miserable and threaten your safety – simply because because they didn’t like a comment you made on-line. Especially on topics such as religion and politics.
People who post anonymously are not hiding, they’re being smart and safe.
Without anonymity, expect the comment thread to be one bland, colorless, boring effort in groupthink where any unpopular opinions are discouraged.
Caveat emptor concerns real estate transactions.
I think it’s “Dick Caveat Emptor.”
@ Neighborhood Eye:
Hopefully you’re not the individual who used to post as “Raquel,” because that person was an absolute idiot.
I guess this went to the crapper, back to original commenting system..
I don’t care for Disqus, in fact i hate it, so all you gotta do is just add subscription to comments so we know if someone posted again in the same topic, otherwise this site will never get more followers because when we post we never know if there is a response or not..
Yes, Neighborhood Eye, you have a point; I have first hand experience along the lines you discuss.
Super Witty, I was using poetic license; res ipsa loquitor.
uh, “loquitur’.
(sorry)
@Webley — this is a WordPress blog, so you should be able to subscribe to the comments section here: http://sunnysidepost.com/comments/feed even if there is no “one-click” subscription button. Works for me — I read the comments in my Google Reader.
